Hourly rate: $37.54 CAD


Under the direction of the Shift Supervisor the AO will monitor, adjust, correct, record, log and control the operation of Energy from Waste Facility. AO duties will also include preforming tests on water treatment samples, monitor and control the operation of the Turbo Generation equipment and steam distribution systems, communicate changes required to the Control Room Operators, Crane and Utility Operators. The AO shall conduct periodic Field Rounds of operating equipment in the Boiler Building, the Air Pollution Control Area, the Residue Handling Area and the Fire Water Pump House. The AO will periodically be required to operate the Pit Cranes that feed fuel to the boilers.


Position Requirements: DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:


Under the direction of the Shift Supervisor, the Auxiliary Operator (A.O.) at Reworld Durham York Facility will monitor and control the plant in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.


The A.O. will operate the Facilities Water Treatment. Boilers and Combustion Control, Steam Distribution, Turbo Power Generation, Standby Fire Pumps and Fire System, Plant Air Compressions and plant Air Distribution, A.P.C. System and Ash handling through the use of the plant control systems. The A.O. will also perform preventative maintenance in the Facility.


The A.O. will assist in maintaining a detailed operating log of the Facilities operations as well as make Work Request Entry's in the Facilities CMMS system.


The A.O. will keep the Shift supervisor and Control Room Operator abreast of any operating condition that may affect the safety of staff and visitors and the environment.


The A.O. will be called upon to provide training for trainees.


Other duties include:

Starts up, operates, inspects, adjusts set points, and shuts down station auxiliary systems including, but not limited to: additive feed and prep systems, atomizer, Baghouse, and ambient air reheater, as applicable. Operates pumps, motors, valves, fans, dampers, mixers and computer systems, as appropriate and applicable, associated with station auxiliary systems. Monitors operation of station auxiliary system components including pumps, motors, valves, fans, dampers, conveyors and mixers as appropriate and applicable. Reads logs and interprets meters, gauges, recorders and annunciators to determine scrubber/Baghouse operating conditions; takes action within prescribed normal, abnormal and emergency station operating procedures. Monitors quality of flue gas, condensate, and feedwater and boiler water as applicable and appropriate. Performs various sampling, laboratory analysis and waste water treatment as assigned. Performs routine preventive maintenance on systems and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned by supervision. Maintains work areas in a clean, orderly and safe manner. Complies with all health and safety policies, procedure, practices and regulations.

COMMUNICATION RESPONSIBILITIES: This person must be able to communicate freely with a wide range of people including Reworld employees, our client and guests to the Facility. The A.O. will receive functional direction from the Control Room Operator.


REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Must be able to monitor several conditions at the same time and stay informed through the control systems of the impact each process variable contributes to the overall operation.


OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to take appropriate safe action on his/her own initiative to prevent injury to personnel, environment non-compliance, and equipment damage during emergencies or unusual situations. Ability to mentor employees, and work effectively with others.

This job requires the ability to work Shift Work (24 Hr.) 7 Days per Week. The schedule maybe 2X 12 Hr. Days /Nights or 3X12 Hr. Days, Afternoon, or Nights, depending on the needs of the Business.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, and to walk. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move between 10 and 50 pounds. Ability to access and make plant tours and/or inspections on a routine basis.


Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.


REQUIREMENTS (Education, Skills, Certificate, Licenses, Experience):

Requires some background in plant operations including some experience in the operation of Power Plant machinery. The candidate will possess a 3rd class or a minimum 4th Class Inter Provincial Power Engineers Certification with all of the 3rd Class Exams written. Experience in an electrical generating facility is most preferred. General knowledge and/or experience in industrial safety are required or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a Solid Fuel facility is highly desirable. Prior commissioning experience is an asset. Internal Applicants must have completed AO Minimum OQP requirements as per current Durham York Operator qualification standard. Successful candidate must meet AO Full OQP qualifications within 12 months of hiring as a condition of employment


LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write comprehensive logs, reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.



MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee periodically enters and inspects various plant areas with rotating machinery; is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; confined spaces, fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; . Risk of electrical shock; and vibration.



WORK ENVIRONMENT: For the most part the Auxiliary Operator works in an environment with some outside weather conditions; & extreme heat as a factor. The noise level in the Facility is above 85db and requires hearing protection.
