Role
Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) is an innovative library system with one of the highest per capita usage rates in Canada. Our vision is to inspire literacy, lifelong learning, and community enrichment for all. Serving more than 380,000+ residents in the Greater Victoria area, we provide library service to 10 municipalities.
GVPL is now hiring auxiliary Circulation Assistants to work at all 12 GVPL library branches in the Greater Victoria region. You don't need to know a lot about libraries. You do need to be curious about what we offer and how you can extend the positive impact of the library with every personal interaction. Personal interactions take place at our 12 library locations, by phone, and online. Make a difference in your community and help people connect with the wealth of learning and leisure opportunities that the library offers.
Education and Experience
Our ideal candidate must have:
High school diploma;
One year of experience providing customer service to the general public.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
Details
There is no guarantee of hours for auxiliary employees.
Auxiliary employees hired in this competition are expected to:
+ Be available on an on-call basis to:
- Work at any of the GVPL branches.
- Work during peak periods, including Spring Break, summer vacations in July and August, and the holiday season in December.
- Receive calls to work during days when there are unexpected absences.
- Work Monday through Saturday throughout the year.
- Work on Sunday, if library branches are open.
- Accept and work a minimum of two to three shifts (if offered) per month to maintain their knowledge and skills. This role has an hourly wage of $30.36 plus 14% in lieu of benefits.
This role is unionized and subject to all collective agreement provisions negotiated with CUPE 410.

The successful candidates are required to provide a satisfactory police information/background check for the vulnerable sector.
The anticipated start date is Monday, September 8, 2025.
Training Requirement
The Auxiliary Circulation Assistant position includes a mandatory, paid training period planned from September 8 to September 19, 2025.
This training must be completed as a condition of employment.
