Edmonton Catholic Schools is looking for a Automotive Mechanic to join their team at Facility Services!


The Automotive Mechanic performs a range of skilled repair and maintenance work on automobiles, light trucks and small engine equipment. Responsibilities include inspection, diagnosis and repair of mechanical, electrical and other defects on Division vehicles. The work also includes regular maintenance, service and repair to braking systems, tire replacement and balancing, starters, alternators, aftermarket accessories, and minor body repairs.


The job coordinates Division vehicles maintenance and repair projects, including planning, scheduling, on-site inspection, facilitating and coordinating with project participants. The job may be required to supervise and coach staff to achieve smooth workflow by delegating assignments to subordinates or explaining procedures to co-workers.


Work involves procedures of a technical nature and uses hand/power tools and various sophisticated test equipment. The job works with minimal supervision or as part of various teams in completing projects and activities.


There is considerable discretion exercised by the incumbent in the performance of its regular duties. Responsibilities require a current Journeyman Automotive Service Technician certification plus several years of related experience.


Work is performed within the Division/department policies and procedures and is guided by automotive and maintenance repair standards and principles and those established by the department. Work is completed in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations and guidelines and the Division's goals and objectives.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES




Project Management

Maintain vehicle records by recording service and repairs Monitor, repair and/or replace component parts of vehicle fleet including brakes, steering joints, cooling systems, lights, tires, suspension, and body components etc. Monitor reports on small engines and maintain records of service Repair and/or rebuild small engines, overhaul and service lawnmowers, snow blowers, sweepers and other mechanical equipment of similar complexity Determine where repairs are required and the most efficient method to complete the work in order of priority Perform testing on equipment using various diagnostic and testing devices to ensure they are within specified standards Certify serviceable equipment and identify items that are no longer serviceable and report/remove/replace Test and assess new equipment items and components on an ongoing basis Assist department staff with a variety of projects and provide cover-off during absences Maintain technical knowledge through courses, workshops, seminars and trade publications Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor


Maintenance and repairs

Assist in development of preventive maintenance program and assess existing equipment for scheduled maintenance/renewal Respond to problem notification service requests and repair Restore emergency power plant engines in the various schools Lubricate, service and repair vehicles and tractors Handle inventory control including purchasing, receiving, shipping and categorizing supplies, parts, materials and equipment Determine estimates of repair costs; complete work orders; record labour; parts and types of repairs done Complete surplus process for retired or unserviceable vehicles and/or equipment Drive and operate heavy equipment and associated attachments e.g. skidsteer with sweeper Identify problems through on-site inspections and report to supervisor - may determine alternatives for corrective action and present recommendations to supervisor for resolution Participate in training sessions for department/Division staff on the basics of equipment operations and maintenance e.g. mowers, blowers, sweepers and power plant engines Assist in the cleanup of worksites Ensure tools and equipment are operating properly and report those that are not Ensure worksites are clean and maintained within safety standards


Building security

Ensure materials and tools are safely operated and stored at all times Secure building/storage areas as required depending on worksite requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS



High School, plus a current Alberta Journeyman Automotive Service Technician Certificate or Interprovincial Red Seal Certification

Several years related experience including operating machines, tractors, loaders, heavy trucks, mowers, sweepers, compressors and large pneumatic and electrical tools Knowledge of automotive braking systems, sensors and modules and diagnostic systems Recent related experience with proven troubleshooting techniques and the ability to work with minimal service information Training and experience in related trades (e.g. welding) is an asset Knowledge of the safe use of power and manual tools and equipment Knowledge of different formula conversions (e.g. metric/standard; Fahrenheit to Celsius; kilograms to pounds) is required Knowledge of the OHS regulations and legislation including working alone guidelines Knowledge of regulations governing WHMIS and TGD is required Knowledge of department and unit policies, procedures, business and operations Working knowledge and proficiency in the use of computer applications, such as Microsoft office suite, electronic attendance systems and/or fleet management systems Standard First Aid/CPR is an asset Ability to read and interpret performance codes and standards such as manufacturer's service manuals, parts bulletins, technical updates etc. Ability to prepare technical reports related to the equipment serviced Strong problem solving and analytical skills Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and good judgment when dealing with other trades, school principals, teachers, students, co-workers and the general public Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team Ability to work without direct supervision Physically able to complete the duties of the job using appropriate tools and techniques Ability to lift up-to 50Kg/110lb, insert hands in confined areas, climb, stand and balance on ladders Ability to work under vehicles while on a hoist or on the shop floor Ability to schedule, plan task priorities and manage several projects with conflicting demands Possess a safety conscious attitude and the ability to influence safe work practices in others Fluency in the English language including both oral and written communication skills is mandatory Valid Class 5 driver's license and the ability to travel to various sites within Edmonton Ability to provide a clean driver's abstract upon hire and as requested Possession of a complete set of recognized basic hand tools
