Job Description

Use your administrative, organizational and leadership skills to enthusiastically support engaging and educational experiences for guests at our facilities. You will be directly involved in our education and day camp programming at Muttart Conservatory, John Janzen Nature Centre and John Walter Museum. Gain valuable experience training volunteers, supervising interpretation staff, supporting events, delivering staff training and coordinating day camp programming and supplies.
What you will do:

  • Perform administrative tasks related to school, birthday and camp programming such as managing documentation for participants, coordinating youth and adult volunteers and supporting staff and coworkers
  • Communicate on an ongoing basis with Programming and Volunteer Coordinators to ensure accuracy in procedures and participant information for programs
  • Organize camp programming supplies including camp bins, first aid supplies, and communication materials
  • Inventory, maintain and deliver program supplies, artifacts and equipment which includes travel to and from businesses and between city facilities using your personal vehicle.
  • Assist with staff recruitment and supervision of interpretation staff including formal training sessions, individual mentoring, and evaluation throughout the season
  • Assist with training and supervision of youth and adult volunteers
  • Provide excellent customer service to our colleagues and visitors
  • Facilitate natural and human history interpretive programs and special event activities
  • Provide on site support to areas such as education and weekend special events, including facilitation, set up and take down
  • Create and publish educational and promotional materials mainly social media content and interpretive signage for multiple facilities
  • Support data collection, surveys and evaluations
Qualifications
  • Completion of the first year of a recognized post-secondary degree or diploma; preference will be given to recreation, history, biology, education-based or related programs.
  • Minimum one year direct experience conducting natural history interpretation, zoo interpretation, historical, recreational, cultural or educational programs.
Assets:
  • Previous supervisory experience with staff and volunteers.
Skills required for success:
  • Strong organizational, time management and strong customer service skills
  • Highly developed and demonstrable verbal and written communication
  • Knowledge of local history and flora/fauna
  • Comfortable and confident handling and working around small animals, insects, amphibians and reptiles

Conditions of Employment:
  • Valid Intermediate First Aid and CPR Level C is a requirement of this position.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent).
  • Must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use for performing City business.
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton.
