Position Summary

:


The Attendant, Emergency Department, is an unregulated care provider who provides direct and indirect support for various patient care activities. The role is accountable and responsible to assist and support other members of the health care team in the provision of safe patient care. Attendants will also support a clean environment through infection prevention and control (IPAC) standards, processes and initiatives and ensure necessary resources are available to support patient care needs.


Responsibilities:



Assists in transporting, lifting and positioning of patients. Other patient care activities include, but are not limited to, assisting/supervision during ambulation; checks with nursing unit staff or direction on whether patient's condition allows for safe transport i.e. accompaniment required. Adheres to safe body mechanics and patient transfer guidelines. Incorporates safety precautions in the department on a daily basis. Assists code teams in emergencies as required. Responsible for completion of annual workplace safety reviews (e.g., WHMIS, Fit testing, CPR etc.). Communicates patient related information to the most appropriate person to access medical intervention. Communicate with all hospital employees to support patient care and unit activities. Reports to the Program Manager or delegate, unresolved concerns or issues which involve inter departmental resolutions. Demonstrates initiative to understand the activities for the day in order to organize and prioritize work. Follows established procedures for optimum workflow e.g. ER key system. Participates in unit huddles and staff meetings by direct attendance, reviewing minutes, and/or forwarding pertinent items for discussion and maintains an awareness of changes to process via e-mail communication. Effectively apply organizational and time management skills to prioritize workload, to problem solve, and to adapt to frequent interruptions and change. Adapt communication and interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients and their families, co-workers, physicians, volunteers and others within our health care community. Monitors the environment to reduce and or eliminate risk. Assume assigned responsibility on the unit in the event of an internal or external disaster. Collaborates with unit and other department's staff to ensure timely and adequate availability of supplies on the unit. Collaborate with other departments to ensure timely patient care delivery. Abide by all WRHN polices and procedures, (i.e., Occupational Health & Safety Act, Public Hospitals Act,) position obligations, and perform work duties in accordance with WRHN's Code of Conduct. Practices infection control, environmental standards and precautions to promote safe and clean work environment, which includes ensuring that daily cleaning standards are met. Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate cleaning products as well as use of and care for cleaning equipment and environment (i.e. wheelchairs between each patient use, bays, isolation rooms, etc.). Performs scheduled housekeeping of equipment, supply carts, work station, and relevant areas. Practices safe disposal of linen and waste according to legislated standards. Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:



Successful completion of Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent. Current CPR Certification. Successfully able to perform their function in accordance with prescribed standards that focuses on the priority of People Safety and the delivery of the highest standard of Quality Care. Demonstrate the physical and mental capabilities necessary for proper and efficient performance of the essential duties of the position. Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate cleaning products as well as use of and care for cleaning equipment e.g. wheelchairs between each patient use.

Preferred Requirements:



Graduate of a Health related course from a recognized Community College. Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate cleaning products as well as use of and care for cleaning equipment e.g. wheelchairs between each patient use.
