Position Overview

The Advanced Technical Skills Simulation Lab (ATSSL) in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief ATSSL Coordinator for approximately 1 year.

The Advanced Technical Skills Simulation Lab (ATSSL) consists of the three distinct labs and two programs which include the Surgical Skills Lab, Clinical Skills Lab, Special Procedures lab and the Southern Alberta Body Donation Program. The Coordinator reports to the ATSSL Operations Manager while working independently for a majority of the time.

Flexibility in work hours is required as part of the regular work schedule. The position requires significant innovation and flexibility to support the various users of our labs, as well as the scope of the sessions. Many sessions involve over 50 learners in the lab simultaneously, split into multiple groups and rotating through stations and practicing diverse clinical skills. Given the variety of ATSSL users (healthcare providers along the full continuum of undergraduate training to continued professional development), the routine maintenance and operation of the lab is quite complex, and requires strong system thinking.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Accountable to the A TSSL Manager:
  • Works independently and as part of a team
  • Participates in Committees at the request of Users Groups, the ATSSL Manager or Medical Director
  • Demonstrate respect and confidentiality with cadavers and cadaver material; recommends and assists in the development of policy and process
  • Assumes role of Team Lead:
  • Develops communication strategies
  • Schedule, plan and coordinate staffing for A TSSL labs
  • Provide orientation, training, guidance and instructions to junior staff which includes tech I\'s , tech II\'s, augmented part timers including Imaging Techs, Anatomist
  • Identifies developmental needs of junior staff suggesting learning opportunities; Provides mentorship and coaching
  • Acts as resource for technical information on Simulation Based Modalities
  • Application of Technical and Professional Expertise:
  • Consult with new and existing clients assessing application(s) and confirming availability of resources and adherence to RCPSC accreditation
  • Identifies opportunities for co-development of events confirming all medicolegal and accreditation standards are adhered to
  • Identify and confirm events requiring Maintenance of Certification credits aligning with RCPSC accreditation standards for granting/providing CPD credits as appropriate and approved by the Medical Director
  • Co-Evaluates Research Proposals confirming all documentation and resources are in place and all medicolegal standards met
  • Assigns cadaveric tissue to users confirming alignment RCPSC accreditation and all medicolegal UofC/ ATSSL policies and processes have been met as per policy and processes
  • Oversee the development of new simulation models in consultation with content experts to promote and enhance teaching and learning
  • Co-design events utilizing new simulation models
  • Fosters productive work relationships with other areas within and /or external to the University
  • Compiles and assists with quarterly and ad hoc reports on operations for the manager Handling of sharp surgical instruments contaminated with cadaver or animal fluids. May be required to work alone on occasion
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in Basic Science or Anatomy required
  • 5 years of experience in Simulation Based Medical Education
  • Previous surgical experience with humans, cadavers or animals, in a hospital, veterinary or research setting preferred
  • Demonstrated high level of precision and accuracy is essential as the impact of error is high
  • Must exercise tact, discretion, respect and confidentiality in all matters
  • Excellent communication skills required to interact with other team members, researchers and facility users
