Primary Purpose



Reporting directly to the Vice President, Academic, the Associate Vice President, Research & Innovation is a strategic and collaborative academic leader who leads the planning and advancement of the research and innovation priorities of the university, and oversees highly significant administrative processes and collaborative efforts with internal and external parties. The primary role of the AVPRI is to encourage, facilitate, promote, and oversee the administration of research and scholarly activity at the university. The AVPRI also serves as the Acting Vice President Academic in the absence of the VPA.


The AVPRI will have direct supervisory responsibility for the Innovation Hub and the Office of Research Services. There will be the opportunity for the AVPRI to work on additional strategic projects as identified by the VPA.

Competencies:


Knowledge and understanding of senior research leadership in the Canadian university setting A proven track record of leading cross-functional teams in planning, reviewing, organizing, and administering academic activity Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop individuals and teams, and engage a range of colleagues in pursuit of organizational vision and goals Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of research and scholarship in the broadest sense, and the ability to mentor and develop other research leaders Ability to foster a culture of innovation, continuous learning, inclusiveness, and familiarity with academic organizational culture and administration Successful track record in working with others, either individually, as a team member or as a leader to accomplish goals, objectives, and desired outcomes through dialogue, collaboration and negotiation Superior listening skills with an accessible, consultative style. A high degree of diplomacy and tact A high level of integrity, credibility, sound judgment, and resourcefulness in decision making and problem-solving Demonstrated inter-cultural understanding and a commitment to equity and diversity Broad familiarity with research policy frameworks
Education and Experience:


Earned doctoral degree with on outstanding record of research and scholarly activity A minimum of five to seven (5-7) years of University faculty experience Preferred minimum of 5 years of relevant post-secondary leadership/administrative experience (for example as an Associate/Assistant Dean, Chair of a large department, or similar post-secondary administrative position)
