Department Overview

The Chief Accountant\'s Department is responsible for TD Bank Group\'s (Bank) consolidated financial statements and selected regulatory filing for the Canadian subsidiaries. The Chief Accountant\'s team ensures that all these filings are accurate, timely and compliant with the accounting and regulatory requirements set by different governing bodies.

The Financial Reporting Controls team within the Chief Accountant\'s Department is responsible for formulating policies and standards over financial reporting related activities, including but not limited to, chart of accounts definition and management, recording and elimination of intercompany transactions, internal banking, account reconciliation & attestation, exception handling and reporting. The team also exerts oversight on the compliance to these policies and standards. The objective of the policies and standards are to control financial reporting risks across the organization to promote accuracy of financial reporting.

Job Requirements

  • Candidate must possess a Chartered Accountant/Chartered Professional Accountant designation (CA/CPA), coupled with 10 years of financial accounting and control experience
  • Strong knowledge of internal controls over financial reporting; practical experience in implementing and operationalizing strong financial controls
  • History of making an impact, developing and executing on strategies and delivering superior results in both the short and long term
  • Proven ability to leverage deep subject matter expertise in financial controls to manage a diverse mandate and a variety of control challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to think conceptually and formulate policy decisions commensurate with the risks involved. Ability to consider practical application of policies and standards given business related specifics
  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communications skills with the ability to articulate complex subject matters simply and clearly
  • Must demonstrate organizational awareness and the ability to manage strong relationships within and across multiple businesses
  • Must possess advanced facilitation, influencing & consensus building skills
  • Strong leadership and people management capabilities with a history of building strong teams
  • Must be detailed-oriented, resourceful, highly adaptable and a critical thinker

Accountabilities:

Reporting to the Vice President, Finance, this role will lead a team of professionals to support the Financial Reporting Controls team mandate.

Responsibilities include:
  • Managing a team of professionals to deliver on financial reporting control requirements both at the consolidated Bank level and Canadian subsidiary level
  • Act as a subject matter expert on financial reporting controls, providing timely advice to senior management and business partners
  • Strengthen the Bank\'s overall internal control environment, enhance policies related to governance on financial reporting, refine governance framework and infrastructure on financial controls across the Bank.
  • Accountable for identifying, assessing and remediating gaps and risk relative to our financial reporting controls
  • Accountable for formulating policies related to governance on financial reporting. Ensure policies are reviewed and updated periodically. Provide expert advice on policy requirements and implementation considerations. Ensure stakeholders are trained on policy requirements and provide oversight and monitoring over compliance to policy
  • Provide end to end thought leadership on financial reporting risks and controls, including data governance requirements, system and process considerations, roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders in line with operating model of the Bank
  • Partner with other lines of defense to oversee the design, monitoring and assessment of compliance to policies
  • Coordinate, manage and develop good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Be the Finance advocate for controls - streamline, standardize, liaise with Internal Audit, Segment Finance
  • Keep abreast of emerging issues, trends, and evolving regulatory requirements and assess potential impacts to the Bank
  • Build for the future and provide people leadership; oversee people plans and strategies to attract, motivate and retain a highly diverse, qualified, and engaged human resource base to fulfill current and future business needs
