POSITION: Associate Veterinarian, Animal Health

STATUS: Permanent; Full-Time

SHIFT: 35 hours per week

LOCATION: Provincial Office, Vancouver BC

The BC SPCA is looking to fill the full-time position of Associate veterinarian, Animal Health at our busy Provincial Office in Vancouver, B.C. About the Position:

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Animal Health, this position focuses on optimizing animal health practices in the shelters. This position is responsible for providing expert advice in shelter medicine to staff, volunteers and the public through guidance and training on standard animal health policies/procedures, through population health case consultation, and by aiding in development of protocols and related training materials. This position works collaboratively with managers and other team members to ensure the highest possible animal health and welfare standards in all BC SPCA shelters.

Some specific duties:

  • Collaborate in the creation, implementation, supervision, and maintenance of evidence-based population-level shelter medicine policies and protocols to maintain and enhance good health, welfare, and quality of life for all BC SPCA sheltered animals.
  • Provide support to the Community Animal Centres in the area of animal health ensuring timely decision-making regarding the physical health & welfare of all animals is being carried out.
  • In collaboration with the Training & Development Specialist, design and create animal health training programs for in-person and on-line delivery. Facilitate in delivery as required.
  • Work with each Community Animal Centre to assist with the attainment of optimum welfare standards in each shelter as defined by related BC SPCA policies and external standards.
  • Track and report on the successful implementation and maintenance of standard operating policies/procedures and associated metrics related to animal health.
  • Consult on cruelty cases with an emphasis on Large-Scale Animal Intakes; may be required to testify in hearings and court cases.
  • Assist with the provincial ringworm culture and response program as required.
  • Create and review written content for website, veterinary newsletter, handouts, and other communications as needed
  • Accept, at minimum, a clinical load sufficient to satisfy licensing requirement at one or more of the BC SPCA veterinary facilities.
  • Participate in veterinary student rotations in the BC SPCA Vancouver Hospital as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications you need to have:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent and is or is eligible, to become a member in good standing of the College of Veterinarians of BC (CVBC) with 1+ years\' relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer.
  • Genuine compassion for animals and sound knowledge of the Five Freedoms and related animal welfare standards
  • Exceptional analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Strong relationship builder
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with internal and external stakeholders at all levels and from diverse backgrounds in a positive and respectful manner
  • Strong computer skills particularly in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, Powerpoint and online meeting software
  • Excellent organizational skills coupled with the ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Dedicated Team Player
  • Valid unrestricted Class 5 BC Drivers\' License and driver\'s abstract and ability to regularly travel throughout the Province as necessary.
