Associate Producer, Just Asking
THE OPPORTUNITY:
We are hiring an Associate Producer to work on the national live radio call-in program Just Asking. This is a permanent full-time position, based in Toronto.
YOUR ROLE:
Just Asking is a weekly live call-in radio program and podcast that aims to answer the questions that are top of mind for Canadians, with a special emphasis on listeners in our target 30-49 demographic. Topics are a mix of breaking news and news of the week stories, along with consumer affairs to ensure that people have "news they can use" to make better decisions in their lives. The tagline of the show shared by host Saroja Coelho every episode is "let's figure it out together."
Reporting to the Senior Producer, the successful candidate will be a journalist with excellent news sense and exceptional critical thinking skills. The candidate will be a strong storyteller, with proven pitch and chase abilities, accomplished audio skills, and a talent for writing audio scripts for a broadcast and podcast audience.
Applicants must demonstrate an interest in and experience with news and current affairs programming, with a proven ability to pivot quickly when breaking news occurs. They must also be able to grasp the kinds of stories that are relevant to all Canadians, while continuing to appeal to our listeners in the 30-49 demographic.
The candidate must be familiar with, and adhere to the CBC's journalistic standards and practices, and demonstrate a commitment to finding diverse voices and perspectives and highlighting them in all of our programming.

KEY TASKS:Pitches program ideas for call-in, with a focus on topics appealing to 30-49 demographic Sources expert guests who can provide background, context, and answer questions live Researches topics, and provides the host with background. Maintains contact files Captures audience questions via voice notes before the show Writes compelling scripts that adhere to the style and format of the program, and that encourage listeners to participate Gathers and edits tape as needed Reviews calls and selects those suitable for air Identifies any potential JSP issues, flags to SP Monitors social media feeds, selects comments for air Works collaboratively with other team members, and other departments when required Participates in all aspects of production


WE ARE LOOKING FOR A CANDIDATE WITH THE FOLLOWING:University degree or equivalent, preferably in journalism or other related field Minimum of two years' relevant experience in a broadcast journalism environment. Exceptional track record pitching and chasing a range of stories, with preference given to those who have experience in live programming Proven experience in all aspects of story production including conducting pre-interviews, research, fact checking, sound mixing and editing Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to CBC's Journalistic Standards and Procedures Excellent and creative writing skills, with the ability to write to the style of the show and the host Impeccable editorial judgment and critical-thinking skills Creative approach and commitment to innovative story-telling and cross-platform programming; familiarity with video a bonus Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment with tight deadlines, and to pivot quickly when breaking news happens Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal Strong track record of ensuring a diversity of voices and perspectives is reflected in programming High level of organization and productivity Independent thinker, self-motivated, but also a team player Willingness to learn new skills as needed for optimal production Ability to work flexible hours - weekend work is required
