Business in Vancouver (BIV) is B.C.'s premier source for business news, analysis and insight. We produce a weekly newspaper, deliver daily online news coverage of the West Coast business landscape and publish a broad portfolio of industry-focused magazines, including those focused on real estate, technology and small business.
The role
We're looking for an associate editor to help manage our magazine portfolio, contribute to the production of our weekly print edition and edit stories for online. You may also occasionally help manage our online newsletters and, when magazines aren't in production, have the opportunity to write stories for our digital and print platforms.
This role combines long-term project management for magazines with the quick turnaround demands of newspaper production.
You'll collaborate extensively with the editor-in-chief and a team of seasoned reporters to develop story ideas and determine the direction of the newspaper and magazines.
Key responsibilities
Editing print stories, columns and features for the weekly print newspaper.
Working with the editor-in-chief and designer on production days to fine-tune stories, make photo selections and tweak the layout under tight deadlines.
Editing online stories.
Developing story ideas and editing for BIV's magazine portfolio, including publications such as BC500, BC Tech, Office Space and Forty Under 40.
Managing some of BIV's newsletters and occasionally filling in on Western Investor's newsletter via the Mailchimp platform.
Helping to curate and edit op-ed submissions.
Maintaining BIV's high editorial standards.
Occasionally helping with the production needs of sister publication Western Investor.* Collaborate with writers, designers and stakeholders to shape engaging, accurate and well-researched business stories
Required qualifications
This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for a seasoned journalist with prior newsroom experience.
Extensive knowledge of the B.C. business community.
Exceptional copyediting and proofreading skills.
Expertise in Canadian Press style.
Ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom.
Strong organizational skills for managing both short-term and long-term projects.
Eligible to work in Canada.
Major bonus points
Experience covering business, finance and economics.
Proficiency in Adobe InDesign.
Familiarity with Mailchimp or similar email newsletter platforms.
Extensive knowledge of B.C. politics.
