The salary range for this position is:

Recruitment range: $98,310 - $122,886 maximum starting salary is determined through knowledge, experience and internal equity.

Performance range: starting salary to max of $141,321 is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

The Associate Director, Security Operations (ADSO) reports to the Director, Campus Security Services and is part of the department\'s leadership team. In the absence of the Director the ADSO will assume the Director\'s responsibilities. This position oversees and directs the day to day security operations on campus and monitors the operation for compliance with federal and provincial regulations as well as University policies.

The ADSO participates in the development of security practices, standards and processes and the delivery of security services. The ADSO is expected to keep abreast of the pace of growth at the University and exercise independent judgment in making recommendations for changing security policies and procedures as necessary. They will provide leadership on day to day policy and procedure changes in the form of instructions to Patrol Managers and administrative staff.

The ADSO is responsible for providing security analyses to the campus community and is part of the Director\'s decision making process which will act on that analysis.

In responding to physical security issues or concerns, the ADSO will either attend to the initial complaint and follows up or respond to an incident report and assigns resources accordingly and/or gives direction to the investigation.

The ADSO may respond to matters of personal safety in collaboration with the Manager Personal Safety that could lead to a confidential investigation that may result in discipline or require involvement in the discharge of grievance procedure responsibilities on behalf of Management

The ADSO will be on call 24/7 in rotation with the Director and Associate Director, Parking and Commuter Services and while on call will be responsible for all Security related matters.

Because of the expertise the ADSO will acquire in fulfilling these functions, participation on the management team bargaining with CUPE and/or the PEA may be required.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience:
  • Degree in a related field such as Criminology or a Technology/Community College diploma, Business Administration or Law Enforcement with related experience or a comparable combination of education, experience and training
  • A minimum of 8 years\' experience in law enforcement or security and as a supervisor or a comparable combination of education, expertise and training
  • Experience with Crime Prevention initiatives
  • BC Government Security Worker\'s License
  • Experience working in the security industry, preferably in a Post-Secondary environment
  • Current knowledge of security systems, including safes, alarms, CCTV and access control
  • Strong keyboarding skills and knowledge of MS Office
  • A working knowledge of crime prevention programs and crime trends
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills both oral and written
  • Awareness of risk and liability in a post-secondary environment
  • Understanding of budgetary procedures for base budgets
  • Strong and demonstrated ability to supervise and provide operational guidance to security staff
Key job-specific competencies:
  • Strong investigative skills
  • Demonstrated expertise in the security field and in applying community policing concepts
  • Working knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Demonstrated knowledge of emergency management
  • An understanding of the university environment and the ability to devise and introduce creative problem-solving strategies in a campus setting
  • Familiarity with all applicable UVic Policies
  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders and authorities in the context of critical incident or traumatic event, as well as investigations
  • Solid analytical skills ability, to apply sound judgement in problem solving, evaluating courses of action and making decisions on complex security matters
  • Adaptable and open to diverse viewpoints
  • Experience developing and implementing equity, diversity and inclusion policies and approaches and in advancing truth, respect and reconciliation with indigenous peoples\'
Unusual working conditions:

This position is required to be on call 24/7 on a monthly rotation with the Associate Director, Parking and Commuter Services . The ASDO can expect disruption to personal schedules on a regular basis to answer queries from Patrol Managers and Security Officers or having to provide onsite management as required. During the peak school season (September to April) the incumbent can expect to receive at least 1 or 2 calls per week while on call. This position is often exposed to very difficult, sometimes traumatic events.
