Summary / purpose of the position

The primary responsibility of the Associate Director, Medical Affairs or Director, Medical Affairs is to lead, supervise and guide/coach the performance of a team of Medial Affairs professionals, that may include Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs), Medical Advisor(s), Medical Excellence functions, and/or others, and their activities within the field and in head office, including face-to-face field visits/meetings when needed, review of field activity tracking and appropriate expense reporting, and all activities to engage, reward, review performance and develop the talent. S/he will also participate in/lead special projects of importance to the business.

This position is a \xe2\x80\x9cPlayer/Coach\xe2\x80\x9d role. In addition to managing the team, as an individual contributor, the Associate Director/Director, Medical Affairs develops and maintains professional relationships with internal and external customers [e.g., Thought Leaders (TLs), Healthcare Professionals, and Formulary Decision Makers] to provide comprehensive medical and scientific support to Medical Affairs, Clinical Development and Ipsen strategic initiatives. This position facilitates information, learning activities and research activities for physicians and ancillary healthcare professionals regarding current and future therapies in development or commercialized by Ipsen.

In addition, the Associate Director/Director, Medical Affairs will be the medical advisor (i.e., country medical lead) for Neuroscience and/or Rare Diseases and will be responsible for the development and implementation of the annual national medical affairs strategy. This includes coordinating an annual and longer term medical strategic planning exercise with MSLs for synchronized development of the National Medical Plan with the MSL territory Medical Plans. The individual also represents the medical therapeutic expertise/resource within the company for the assigned therapeutic area; providing, and building, medical insights that will be used to support cross-functional groups. The Associate Director/Director, Medical Affairs will be the lead medical representative on brand teams.

This position is office based in Mississauga, Ontario and reports to the Head of Medical Affairs, Canada.

Main responsibilities / job expectations

The primary responsibilities of the role include:

Oversight, management, development and mentorship of a team.

Identifying and developing relationships with national, regional, local and emerging medical and scientific Thought Leaders (TLs), academic centers and researchers consistent with the strategy and objectives of Medical Affairs, Clinical Development and the assigned therapeutic/disease area.

Identifying therapeutically focused medical or scientific concepts that can be leveraged into product differentiation and incorporated in the strategic planning.

Maintaining relationships with global medical teams.

As appropriate, leading and planning all medical launch activities (from pre-launch to post launch) and all life cycle management medical activities in the assigned therapeutic areas.

Providing appropriate scientific, clinical, and educational support for internal and external customers.

Providing Ipsen\xe2\x80\x99s Medical representation and oversight of clinical programs including Ph IV studies, externally sponsored research studies, posters and publications, medical information, Canadian Disease Area Expert management, product defense and communications in alignment of corporate or North American Communication Teams, advisory boards, scientific exchange meeting, consultant engagement, educational events and review and selection of educational and scientific/clinical grants.

Representing Ipsen at applicable conventions and conferences.

Aligning with Medical Information and Pharmacovigilance teams to ensure accurate delivery of medical and scientific messages, as needed.

Engaging in scientific exchange and education about current and emerging therapies with TLs.

Developing and maintaining scientific, clinical and therapeutic expertise in the assigned therapeutic area(s).

Collaborating with commercial operations by participating in TL Speaker Training and Internal Stakeholder Training (e.g., field sales).

Working with TLs and assist as needed in supporting investigator-initiated clinical trials.

Ensure Canadian participation in global company sponsored trials in assigned therapeutic area(s).

Leading/participating on special project teams as necessary.

Knowledge, abilities & experience

Education / Certifications:

PhD, PharmD, MD, or other recognized doctorate level education with supporting applicable health science background is required. MSc will be considered if the experience and knowledge level in the assigned therapeutic areas are substantial.

Experience required to be considered for this opportunity at an Associate Director level:

MSL experience, Medical Advisor and/or MSL management experience strongly preferred.

Expertise in Neurosciences and/or Rare Diseases will be a strong asset.

Minimum 6 years post professional degree practice or relevant transferrable experience (e.g., clinical practice, academic research, regulatory/scientific, Medical Advisor).

Prior people management experience is preferred and will be a strong asset.

Clinical trials/research knowledge an asset.

Experience required to be considered for this opportunity at a Director level:

2+ years of people management experience required.

Expertise in Neurosciences and/or Rare Diseases will be a strong asset.

Minimum 8 years post professional degree practice or relevant transferrable experience (e.g., clinical practice, academic research, regulatory/scientific, Medical Advisor).

Experience in a strategic medical affairs role overseeing the development of strategic medical plans for multiple products/therapeutic areas required.

Ability to implement effective medical affairs governance strategies.

Clinical trials/research knowledge required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of customer segments and market dynamics within Neurosciences and/or Rare Diseases.

Knowledge of the Canadian regulations and Health Care system.

Scientific and pharmaceutical knowledge within the assigned areas and/or experience.

Highly developed interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and collaboratively with cross-functional teams and to manage, engage and develop a diverse and talented team of MSLs and Medical Advisors.

Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain credible and scientific relationships with key customers in assigned therapeutic area.

Must be a strategic thinker who can look ahead and clearly anticipate future needs, consequences, and trends.

Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
