This position plays a vital role in completing existing exhibition projects, as well as initiating new exhibitions, through the interpretation of research, collections, and educational goals into public-facing digital and physical displays.The successful candidate will help shape a curatorial approach that aligns with the Centre\xe2\x80\x99s mandate, prioritizing relationship building, Indigenous data sovereignty, accessibility, and meaningful consultation and collaboration with Indigenous communities, residential school Survivors, Elders and Indigenous Knowledge holders while actively promoting the principles of Indigenization.Acknowledging the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre\xe2\x80\x99s commitment to collaborating with residential school Survivors, Indigenous communities and facilitating Indigenous-led access to collections, the Curator focuses on the development of exhibitions that share Indigenous knowledges, acknowledge Indigenous data sovereignty and respectful use of Survivors\xe2\x80\x99 testimonies.Organizational StatusReports to the Executive Director or designate. Works closely and in collaboration with the Executive Director, Project Manager, collections team, research team, as well as education and engagement staff. This position takes a lead role in engaging with Indigenous communities and partners, interested parties, and other project contractors within the context of exhibition development and implementation.Work PerformedCuration and Exhibition Development:

  • Works collaboratively with exhibition project teams to lead the development, interpretation, design, writing, and installation of both digital and physical exhibitions;
  • Works directly with designers, artists, researchers and Indigenous community members to coordinate exhibition development;
  • Oversees the design and interpretation of day-to-day layouts and displays in the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre gallery space;
  • Develops integrated long-term plans for the future development of the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre gallery space;
  • Writes, develops and designs content related to experiences and histories of (but not limited to) residential schools in Canada, Indian hospitals in Canada and/or settler colonialism in Canada;
  • Collaborates with exhibition project partners to develop exhibition themes and content that is responsive, accessible and respectful to community input and integrates Indigenous storytelling and/or methodologies;
  • Advises and contributes to the drafting of policies related to exhibitions;
  • Provide all necessary curatorial materials for funding requests, reporting and grant applications.
Community Engagement
  • Works closely with the Indigenous Engagement and Programming Manager to build and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities, artists, and organizations as relevant to the development of content and materials for exhibitions and programming;
  • Facilitates community consultations and engagement sessions on exhibition concepts and content.
Education and Outreach
  • Collaborate and advise on educational materials, curriculum development and programming to accompany exhibitions, including guided tours and outreach activities.
Consequence of Error/JudgementThe Associate Curator of Exhibitions will exercise initiative, sound judgment, and tact in working with faculty, staff and contacts at other institutions. Good judgment in the assessment of narratives and key relationships is imperative, as is attention to detail and organization. Errors, poor judgment, and inappropriate decisions can impede the work of the IRSHDC and result in missed opportunities.Supervision ReceivedSignificant personal initiative is expected for work performed in this role. Works independently under the broad direction of the Executive Director of the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre (IRSHDC).Supervision GivenThe Associate Curator of Exhibitions may manage, recruit, and train staff, students, volunteers, or contract auxiliary staff and consultants in their area of work.Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one\xe2\x80\x99s own- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one\xe2\x80\x99s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusionPreferred QualificationsUndergraduate or Graduate degree in Indigenous Studies, Art History, Museum Studies, or a related field.Deep knowledge and understanding of Indigenous art, design, histories, oral testimonies and/or histories of residential schools, Indian Hospitals and settler colonialism.Previous experience in exhibition curation, preferably with focuses on Indigenous knowledges, Indigenous-related topics, storytelling, oral testimonies, arts and/or design.Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with research partners, Indigenous community representatives, designers and developers.Creative and innovative thinker with a passion for prioritizing residential school Survivor and Indigenous knowledges through art, exhibitions, and digital media.
