The Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation sets the strategic direction and oversees the administration of the University of Ottawa\xe2\x80\x99s research enterprise, including funding, equipment and facilities, international collaborations, partnerships and business development.

Position Purpose

Reporting to the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (VPRI), the Assistant Vice-President, Research Services (AVP-RS) provides advice, guidance, and oversight for the operations and strategic services of the uOttawa research portfolio. Plans, organizes and directs all facets of uOttawa research services by defining strategies and delivering pre- and post-award administrative services to ensure enterprise-wide management excellence and accountability that meets the current and emerging needs of the uOttawa research community.

The Assistant Vice-President\xe2\x80\x99s responsibilities impact directly and substantively on the University\xe2\x80\x99s ability to attract and effectively manage external research funds entrusted to it, the ability of its professors to successfully secure funding and to effectively carry out their research programs, and on the promotion of the University of Ottawa\xe2\x80\x99s image as a diverse and inclusive climate for research and knowledge mobilization which has a positive impact on the life of Canadians.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

Lead Strategic Planning and Research Strategy Development to identify strategies and approaches that will position uOttawa as a top-five research-intensive university in Canada.

Provide Oversight of Pre- and Post-award Research Administration Services to help researchers obtain research funds and support effective management of the uOttawa research portfolio.

Lead Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) activities for research to foster a culture where diversity is celebrated and a source of strength in scholarship, research and innovation.

Lead the institutional knowledge mobilization strategy to engage our communities in areas of mutual interest and increase the impact of uOttawa research by promoting its uptake into policies, products and services.

Advance the mandate of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation and forge strong institutional relationships through communications, networking activities and formal representations within the University and affiliated institutions and with external stakeholders, including sponsors.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • A minimum of a graduate degree in a relevant field and at least ten years of progressive management experience, preferably in an academic research administration environment. Experience with management in a unionized environment. Demonstrated knowledge of University policies and procedures.
  • Superior oral and written communication, organizational, interpersonal, decision-making and analytical skills. Demonstrated effective leadership, motivational and planning abilities. Excellent tact, judgment and discretion. Ability to be comfortable, credible and persuasive within academic and government environments.
  • Extensive knowledge of research administration issues and research funding by granting councils, government, non-government organizations and the private sector, including knowledge of current and emerging legislative and regulatory developments.
  • Extensive experience in working with research funding organizations and/or with research projects in an academic environment.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in program development and implementation of policies and strategies related to all research activities of the University.
  • Awareness and understanding of the university research environment and the evolving Canadian research landscape.
  • Demonstrated leadership in the development of new projects, ability to plan in the short, medium and long term and to take appropriate measures to achieve the objectives.
  • Excellent analytical and information synthesis skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in French and English.
  • Superior ability to interact with various constituencies, including senior management, researchers, senior hospital executives, senior management of funding organizations and government agencies
