Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Assistant to the Dean, Student Life (ADSL) is responsible for overseeing a variety of portfolios including orientation and transition, leadership development, mentorship, career education, community engagement, and equity, diversity, and inclusion. The ADSL is broadly responsible for ensuring the best possible student experience, with particular attention to the needs of our international and commuter students.

The ADSL is a scholar-practitioner whose work is rooted in scholarship and best practice within student affairs. They are responsible for developing and implementing educational programs and initiatives, including the identification of learning outcomes, pedagogical techniques, and evaluation methods. The incumbent is responsible for establishing a student life communications strategy and overseeing the development of digital and print materials, drafting content, and managing social media.

The incumbent works closely with the Innis College Student Society, levy groups, course unions, and clubs to ensure they are well-supported and equipped to be successful. They are responsible for advising student leaders and providing training on a variety of topics including event planning, risk assessment, financial management, equity, diversity, and inclusion, teamwork, and conflict management.

The ADSL works closely with the Dean to inform key priorities and objectives. They are responsible for developing assessment tools, conducting detailed analyses, preparing reports, and communicating information to internal and external stakeholders. The incumbent is also responsible for supervising the Student Life Coordinator and a number of casual staff and work-study students.

Although most work is conducted during regular business hours, evening and weekend work is regularly required. The ADSL is also required to be on-call after-hours for approximately one week per month.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing student assessment plans to support student learning outcomes and competencies
  • Conducting a detailed analysis of student feedback and learning outcomes to inform program planning activities
  • Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars
  • Developing strategies that maximize outreach to students
  • Developing content for marketing and/or promotional materials
  • Training and coaching student life staff and student leaders
  • Resolving minor interpersonal disputes between students and/or student staff
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience. Study in student development, leadership development, community development, cross-cultural communications, or adult education preferred.
  • Minimum four years working in a university residence or student life context.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and assessing educational programs and initiatives designed to support student success in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing orientation and transition, mentorship, and/or equity, diversity, and inclusion programs in post-secondary education contexts.
  • Experience with evaluation and research tools, and demonstrated ability to analyze and synthesize data.
  • Experience in facilitating collaborative partnerships with a variety of university stakeholders including students, student leaders, staff, faculty, and alumni.
  • Experience advising student societies, levy groups, course unions, and/or clubs.
  • Demonstrated experience managing emergency situations and crisis response.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and across diverse contexts.
  • Experience supervising casual staff, work-study students and volunteers in a unionized environment; demonstrated experience taking a leadership and coaching role within teams
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing communications strategies for events and programming; experience creating promotional content for digital, print, and social media.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict management skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution skills, including the ability to make quick, sound judgments under pressure.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends, and being on-call for approximately one week per month.
