The Assistant Technician is a part-time (5-7 hours per week) continuing position responsible for providing weekly flushing, testing and inspection for the drench safety equipment in the Biology and Chemistry research and teaching laboratories.

Responsibilities:

Major Safety Duties:

  • Refer to appropriate safe work protocol (SWP) procedure and provide input on work hazards based on tasks.
  • Weekly scheduled inspection dates (Campus Optics) will be assigned by Biology Lab Manager.
  • Performs regular flushing, testing and inspection of lab safety equipment, in particular, drench shower/eyewash combination units, eyewash stations (both deck-mounted and faucet.
  • Use dedicated equipment in biocontainment level 2 labs.
  • Tag out units based on failed inspection criteria.
  • Document deviations or non-conformances as issues in the Campus Optics inspection report.
  • Provide saline eyewash bottle for failed eyewash units. Eyewash bottles must be within expiration date.
  • Enter inspection results, log issues (document deviations or non-conformances) and complete reports in Campus Optics prior to due date.
  • Communicate results based on non-conformance.
Minor Safety Duties:
  • May include refill or restock eyewash solution and update eyewash label with expiration date.
Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in undergraduate degree or possess diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution, with specialization in a relevant area.
  • 1 year of directly related lab experience or an acceptable equivalent of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to demonstrate and/or explain detailed technical procedures.
  • Must have excellent ability to interact with people and work independently.
  • Should have good, general knowledge of WHMIS 2015 regulations and safety data sheets.
  • Must have good organizational ability.
  • Must be able to adhere to schedules and deadlines.
  • Must be able to keep accurate records.
  • Must have experience in laboratory setting.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with faculty, students and the public.
  • Must be willing to undergo training, effectively carry out duties, perform responsibilities.
  • Comply with UW respectful workplace policy, WPSH.
Note: no direct or minimal exposure to chemicals (report any existing chemical or allergenic sensitivities to supervisor).

An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Must be willing to work a schedule of hours (5-7 hours per week maximum) between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM Monday to Friday. The candidate can schedule shift work between Sunday-Saturday 8 AM to 7 PM as per Work Alone policy (UW Safety App, Safe Walk and check-in with RCFE Security at start and end of shift). After-hours work: this may be a sessional summer trial accommodation.

The salary range for this position will be from $17.26 to $18.46 per hour.
