The Department of Linguistics in the Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS) and the Graduate Centre for Academic Communication (GCAC) in the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time teaching stream position in Linguistics and Graduate Communication. The primary appointment will be in the Department of Linguistics (51%) with the secondary appointment in the Graduate Centre for Academic Communication (49%). The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Rhetoric and Composition, Second-Language Pedagogy or a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. Candidates must have teaching experience in a degree-granting program, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in Linguistics, and graduate courses in advanced academic writing and speaking to multidisciplinary groups. The candidate will have qualifications/experience in the following areas: (1) teaching graduate communication, (2) designing curriculum for advanced writing instruction, (3) supporting multilingual students (English for Academic Purposes), and (4) conducting scholarship with a focus on multilingual communities. They must be able to teach in several of the following areas: phonetics, sociophonetics, phonology, discourse analysis, advanced academic writing, English for Academic Purposes, oral communication, and English linguistics, especially World Englishes. Experience with West African languages, Youth languages, translanguaging and/or code-switching are assets. Experience teaching multidisciplinary groups would be an asset. Candidates must have teaching experience in a degree-granting program, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.
Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below) as well as strong letters of reference.
Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
