Position Description:
The Department of Music Performance invites applications for a tenure-track position in Instrumental Conducting (Wind Orchestra & Community Engagement) at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting August 1, 2023. Applications at the rank of Associate Professor may be considered for exceptional candidates.
Job Duties:
The academic duties will consist of teaching, research, and service to the University. Accordingly, the individual will be expected to maintain a high level of professional activity while conducting the McGill Wind Orchestra, contributing to the development of the graduate conducting area as well as providing academic and creative leadership for community engagement (reaching anglophone and francophone communities in the Montreal area) and entrepreneurship activities. Other teaching duties may include instrumental teaching in the candidate's field of specialization as well as undergraduate and graduate courses related to the candidate's domain. The ability to work collaboratively with both performers and researchers within Schulich's extensive course offerings is desired. Active participation in departmental and faculty committees and student recruitment is expected. The ability to develop and sustain a level of performance activity or research commensurate with the University's expectations for tenure is required.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
The successful candidate should demonstrate extensive experience leading wind orchestra programs and teaching conducting at the graduate level, as well as a track record of music entrepreneurship and the ability to successfully engage with diverse communities in and outside an academic context. Bilingualism (English/French) is an important asset. The applicant should possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills. A doctorate or equivalent professional experience is expected.
