Assistant Professor Of Canadian Literature

Halifax, NS, Canada

Job Description

The Department of English at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia invites applications for a Probationary Tenure-Track position in \xe2\x80\x9cCanadian Literature\xe2\x80\x9d at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence July 1, 2024. The position and salary are subject to final budgetary approval.

The Department of English understands that those working in \xe2\x80\x9cCanadian Literature\xe2\x80\x9d (or Literatures in Canada) will have the ability to work across the field in its historical and cultural depth from the points of contact through early writing to modernism and on to the contemporary. The research and teaching of Literatures in Canada can include active engagement with editing, publishing, and book history, as well as creative writing and decolonial and anti-racist pedagogies. The research and teaching of Literatures in Canada also requires a nuanced understanding of the ways in which Indigenous literatures and their histories exist in association with, but often separate from, Canadian identifications. As the only U15 institution in Mi\'kma\'ki, Dalhousie has an important role to play in ensuring that local Indigenous and African Nova Scotian literary traditions are recognized for their significance in the larger history of Literatures in Canada.

Candidates must have a relevant PhD completed by the start date of the appointment; demonstrated excellence (or demonstrated potential for excellence) in teaching at different levels of study, from first-year to PhD; and an accomplished research profile, commensurate with career stage. The successful candidate will be expected to teach all levels of graduate and undergraduate courses, and will also have the opportunity to develop courses in their specific areas of interest.

The Department of English is a research-intensive department that also places strong emphasis on excellent pedagogy for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Qualified candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a sample of published work, and the names of three potential referees. Letters of reference and evidence of teaching excellence will only be sought at the long-list stage.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. Dalhousie University commits to achieving inclusive excellence through continually championing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. The university encourages applications from Indigenous persons (especially Mi\'kmaq), persons of Black/African descent (especially African Nova Scotians), and members of other racialized groups, persons with disabilities, women, and persons identifying as members of 2SLGBTQ+ communities, and all candidates who would contribute to the diversity of our community.
