The Division of Neurology, Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a full-time academic position at the rank of Assistant Professor (grant tenure track).
The Division of Neurology is one of the largest divisions within the UBC Department of Medicine, and spans many activities in clinical, research and educational spheres, primarily located at the major teaching hospitals affiliated with the UBC Faculty of Medicine. The Division is nationally and internationally recognized for its clinical and research programs in multiple sclerosis, neurodegenerative disorders including dementias, motor neuronal disease, Parkinson's disease and stroke. The Division of Neurology is consistently successful in obtaining peer reviewed grant funding from agencies within Canada and internationally. Divisional members make important contributions to both basic neuroscience and clinical neurological literature. Clinically, the Division provides province-wide tertiary and quaternary care for a variety of neurological disorders. Faculty members are actively involved in teaching and supervising all levels of students and trainees from undergraduate to postgraduate students, clinical and research fellows. The Residency Training Program in Neurology is one of the largest in the country.
The UBC Department of Medicine (DOM) provides excellence in research, teaching and clinical services related to the nature, cause and prevention of adult diseases. We are the largest Department in the Faculty of Medicine with over 1,200 faculty and staff. The Department is comprised of 18 divisions with faculty located throughout the Province of British Columbia. The UBC DOM is committed to ensuring the success of our learners and faculty, and to contributing to the health of the Province of British Columbia.
Reporting to the Head of the UBC Department of Medicine through the Head, Division of Neurology Medicine, the successful candidate will lead an independent research program focused on the early detection and prevention of neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing biomarkers and screening protocols for early diagnosis and prognosis of Parkinson's disease and related disorders
  • Developing and testing preventive interventions such as pharmaceutical, lifestyle, digital, and/or stimulation-based strategies
  • Evaluating the health, economic, and policy impacts of preventive approaches
  • Collaborating with national and international Parkinson's disease centres and initiatives
  • Collaborating with other specialties relevant to prodromal/early Parkinson's disease, such as gastrointestinal and sleep medicine
  • Contributing to and leading clinical trials at all stages of Parkinson's disease and related movement disorders
  • Contributing to research efforts across the Pacific Parkinson's Research Centre
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the teaching activities of the Department, as well as provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners. The incumbent will also be expected to provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community. They will work collaboratively in diverse groups to bring forward strategic initiatives for the Department and the Faculty. The successful candidate will hold an MD/PhD or an MD, will have certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Neurology (FRCPC), be eligible for licensure as a physician neurologist in the Province of British Columbia and will have successfully completed a minimum two-year clinical research Fellowship in Movement Disorders. The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching and scholarly activity. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own, and a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
The expected salary for this position is $ 135,000-145,000 per annum.
