Description:

The School of the Environment in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Environmental Law. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2024 or shortly thereafter.

We seek candidates conducting interdisciplinary research on international energy and climate change law and policy. Specifically, we seek candidates investigating the regulation, governance, and justice aspects of renewable and other clean energy technologies, sustainable public and private finance, and climate and carbon transition implications, with a particular focus on Africa. The successful candidate must have experience in a law practice in Africa and a track record of working with government agencies and NGOs on sustainable development and corporate social responsibility. The successful candidate must have published refereed articles on climate governance in Canada and Africa, must have experience writing policy papers on regulatory approaches to resource management and carbon emissions, and must have designed and taught courses on environmental law.

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in law, focussing on the regulation of low-carbon economies, by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in interdisciplinary research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our . The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally-funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The is an interdisciplinary hub within the Faculty of Arts & Science, running undergraduate and graduate programs in environment and sustainability. This position is part of a new research cluster at the School on The Sustainability Transition, focussing on social, cultural, and technological changes needed to bring about just transition to a low-carbon future. The appointment will be held at the University of Toronto campus in downtown Toronto (St. George campus).
