The Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences and the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invite applications for a full-time tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The appointment will be a joint appointment between the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences (51%) and the Department of Anthropology (49%), with an expected start date of July 1, 2024, or shortly thereafter.

This position is part of a cohort of similar faculty searches in Anthropology, Arts, Culture & Media, Biological Sciences, Health & Society, Historical & Cultural Studies, Language Studies, Management, Political Science, and Sociology. New colleagues will have the opportunity to be connected with previous cohorts of faculty from under-represented groups, including those hired through targeted efforts in the last three years in departments spanning the Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities.
The successful candidate must have earned a PhD in Environmental Sciences and/or Environmental Anthropology (or a closely related discipline) by the time of appointment and have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching with an emphasis on working closely with Indigenous peoples. We seek candidates who have some experience working within North America and who have a commitment to pursuing ongoing field research in Canada and/or the United States. Candidates must have expertise in at least three of the following areas: (1) the impact of human beings on climate change; (2) the use of fire regimes to manage biodiversity; (3) formation mechanisms, succession patterns, and carbon accumulation in wetlands; (4) an understanding of how settler / colonial relations have impacted environmental policy; and (5) expertise in methods of analysis related to sediments, landscape geomorphology, and/or paleo-environmental reconstruction.
The successful candidate will contribute courses in both Environmental Sciences and Anthropology. They will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must also be committed to the highest standard of pedagogy at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Research excellence will be demonstrated by a combination of record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, evidence of external funding, well-developed research ideas for future research as outlined in the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.
