The Department of Emergency Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, College of Health Sciences, University of Alberta, in partnership with Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Zone, is inviting applications for a full-time Academic Emergency Physician at the Assistant Professor level, with expertise in emergency medicine and at least one related area(s) of scholarship. The Department of Emergency Medicine, within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, is a growing research and education-focused Department, currently consisting of 45 Full-Time Academic Faculty and over 200 Clinical Faculty. The Department has a fully accredited Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada residency program (5 years) and it works very closely and supports the University of Alberta Department of Family Medicine's College of Family Physicians of Canada CFPC-Emergency Medicine program. The Department also offers clinical experience to medical students and residents from other training programs during their mandatory emergency medicine rotations. Research groups within the Department are heavily involved in evidence-based medicine and have produced high-quality evidence through primary research for over 25 years. Knowledge synthesis and mobilization activities have provided a platform from which to exchange valuable information that has been used to improve the quality of care delivered to emergency patients in Alberta, nationally, and internationally.

Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will be expected to mentor and teach residents, supervise summer and elective research students, and is encouraged to support graduate students. The role involves membership on the DEM Research Committee, participation in research strategic priority setting, and the development of an independent research program. Expectations include knowledge dissemination and research impact, reviewed annually with the Chair and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry Faculty Evaluation Committee (FEC).
The University is seeking a candidate who will enhance the academic interests of the Department as well as the impact in emergency medicine specific research areas, including but not limited to the following:

  • Educational Scholarship;
  • Knowledge Synthesis and Knowledge Mobilization Research specific to the discipline of Emergency Medicine;
  • Health System Outcomes;
  • Clinical Informatics;
  • Quality Improvement.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will be a physician (MD) certified in emergency medicine by either the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC-Emergency Medicine) or the College of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC-Emergency Medicine), and be eligible for licensure with College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). The ideal candidate will have received advanced training in epidemiology or related health research methods (i.e., graduate studies programs [Masters or PhD]).
