Position Description: Assist with estimates based on the design documents, narratives, and specifications, focusing on the Mechanical/Plumbing/Fire Protection/Electrical/Technology/LV Systems (MEP) trades.

Reports to: Mechanical/Electrical/MEP Estimator

Essential Duties & Responsibilities*: Specifically relating to the mechanical and electrical systems:

  • Prepare quantity take-offs for all Mechanical/Plumbing/Fire Protection/Electrical/Technology/LV System (MEP) items beginning with the conceptual design through completed construction documents.
  • Assist Mechanical/Plumbing/Fire Protection/Electrical/Technology/LV System (MEP) analyses, research and estimates. Preliminary design work may be required to complete conceptual estimates.
  • Analyze existing site conditions and all contract documents to determine required scope that is not already indicated.
  • Meet with local material suppliers and equipment vendors to develop working relationships and solicit accurate and current pricing of plumbing fixtures, HVAC equipment, piping & sheet metal material, lighting, distribution equipment, low voltage systems, and miscellaneous material pricing.
  • Develop working relationships with local sub-contractors in order to build and maintain a robust list of qualified bidders for all projects.
  • Assist with the constructability analysis of project documents. Communicate design and constructability issues to the project team in accordance with the project contract.
  • Assist with first costs analysis and life cycle analysis with the design team.
  • Assist operations staff and estimators to ensure general conditions and general requirements are properly addressed in the estimate including, but not limited to, items such as temporary heating/cooling, electrical, power and lighting, including estimating of electrical and natural gas consumption during construction.
  • Coordinate equipment pricing with Turner Logistics for Mechanical/Plumbing/Fire Protection/Electrical/Technology/ LV System (MEP) estimates.
  • Assist with a value analysis by defining alternatives to the proposed Mechanical/Plumbing/Fire Protection/Electrical/Technology/LV (MEP) systems, materials and equipment that are more cost efficient.
  • Participate in the preparation and assembly of estimates and proposals for different contract types (lump sum, GMP, Cost Plus, etc.)
  • Assist with estimate reviews with the design team and client.
  • Participate in project hand-off from Preconstruction to Operations.
  • Assist with the preparation of scope requisitions for the bidding/procurement of Mechanical/Plumbing/Fire Protection/Electrical/Technology/LV (MEP) systems. Coordinate with fellow estimators to eliminate scope gaps and overlaps.
  • Evaluate subcontractor proposals relative to their scope of work. Determine scope coverage and manage risk of scope gaps.
  • Gather and analyze Mechanical/Plumbing/Fire Protection/Electrical/Technology/LV System (MEP) bid data for all projects using Turner system breakdown sheets.
Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Construction Management plus a minimum of two years related Mechanical/Plumbing/Fire Protection/Electrical/Technology/LV System (MEP) project experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience. Proven written and verbal communication abilities. Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Office suite. Ability to read, understand and interpret contract documents, drawings, specifications, scopes of work and project schedule. Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
