This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).
This position has an initial appointment of 6 months. Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with Schedule D of the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.

- This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.
This role is a term position to prepare materials for, and to teach, a graduate-level cytogenetics course (LABMP 586) for the Molecular Diagnostics course-based MSc program within the department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology, which will be offered in Spring/Summer 2026.
This laboratory simulation course covers topics including specimen preparation, culture, harvest, slide preparation and staining. This course will focus on the analysis of constitutive and somatic abnormalities and the correct utilization of ISCN nomenclature. This course will utilize an external online platform for karyotyping.
This position is fully in person. Work will take place onsite on North Campus, Clinical Sciences Building and Kipnes Academy.

Initial responsibilities would include:
Setting up the laboratory (identifying and ordering supplies needed)
Developing the lab manual
Creating competency assessments to support the course delivery and assisting the program director in mapping to identified learning objectives
Setting up the course on the LMS (Canvas)
The candidate will also provide instruction to learners over six weeks in either Spring or Summer term 2026.
They will:
Demonstrate and teach techniques in including specimen preparation, culture, harvest, slide preparation, routine and special staining, analysis of metaphase chromosomes and reporting using ISCN nomenclature;
Complete assessments of students (whether this is via assignments, exams, demonstrations, presentations etc), maintain records of student progress;
Assist students requiring academic support;
Complete final evaluation of students and submit final grades to the course coordinator/program director.
Baccalaureate degree
Recent hands-on clinical experience in human cytogenetics, specifically in culturing and karyotyping blood, prenatal specimens, fibroblasts, and bone marrow
Familiarity with clinical laboratory practice
Experience working with ISCN 2024 nomenclature and CCMG practice guidelines
Experience teaching or mentoring students in a didactic or lab setting, and/or adult education experience
Experience with interphase and metaphase FISH is an asset
Canadian certification (MLT or CGT) is an asset, but is not required
A graduate degree (MSc or PhD in related discipline) is an asset but not required
