Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Housing or designate, the Assistant Lead Carpenter is responsible for overseeing and performing skilled carpentry work for renovation, repair, and new construction projects on band-owned properties. This role includes supervising and mentoring junior workers or apprentices (including students or band members in training), coordinating with other trades, ensuring work quality and safety, and contributing to project planning and material ordering. The Assistant Lead Carpenter will play a key role in delivering high-quality, safe, and culturally respectful housing improvements.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Adams Lake Indian Band policies and procedures. Lead the execution of carpentry-related renovations, including framing, drywall, trim, flooring, cabinetry, and exterior repairs Serve as a mentor to apprentices and local workers, providing hands-on instruction and fostering skill development within the community Coordinate day-to-day work on housing construction or renovation sites, ensuring timelines, safety and standards are met Interpret construction drawings and specifications to ensure accurate project completion Conduct site assessments and identify material needs, reporting to the Housing Director Communicate progress, concerns, or changes to the housing Director Collaborate with other contractors or departments (eg. Plumbing, electrical, mold remediation) to sequence work efficiently Attend planning and reporting meetings as required. Work safe enforcement. Certification of apprentice hours Other related duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS

Red Seal certification preferred. Training in BC First Aide an asset. Construction trade certification, including work safe training. Experience in a First Nations environment Experience working with Indigenous youth or in community training settings is an asset Knowledge and implementation of BC Building Code construction compliances. Ability to certify apprentice hours Several years of experience in the construction industry, including experience as a construction supervisor or field superintendent, are required. Good Supervisory skills Good verbal and written communication skills. Excellent analytical and organizational skills to achieve desired results. Diplomacy, tact and confidentiality in dealing with a variety of people. Flexibility is a must to adapt to changing work priorities. Good judgement and problem-solving skills must be exercised at all times.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES


From time to time the Assistant Lead Carpenter may have band members, sub-contractors or others working with them on various initiatives. The Assistant Lead Carpenter must be willing to coordinate work related schedules and activities with all of these. Must be capable of leading a small team of apprentices or trainees, including overseeing daily tasks, providing instruction and conducting information evaluations.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS


Those normally associated with a typical construction site. Work safe practices must be adhered to at all times.



WORKING CONDITIONS


The majority of work is performed outside and within a construction site.



EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE


Office - Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook Normal construction tools, electric and manual



OTHER REQUIREMENTS


Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License



BONA FIDE JOB REQUIREMENTS


Current Criminal Records Check with vulnerable sector clearance, with results acceptable to ALIB.



TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:


Full time permanent position


Wage starting at: $40/hour.
