The Assistant Head Nurse is responsible for overseeing the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of resident care from a unit level. The Assistant Head Nurse, with guidance and support from the Care Manager (or designate) assumes responsibility for staff assignments. Works to ensure patient flow and acts as a resource for skills assessment, staff development, equipment maintenance and other daily operations of the unit. The Assistant Head Nurse has strong clinical skills and is able to provide frontline nursing care, as required, as well as support staff in the delivery of exemplary nursing care. The Assistant Head Nurse refers issues of a financial or human resource nature to the Care Manager (or designate) for their guidance and/or resolution. The Assistant Head Nurse provides feedback for annual performance appraisals by conducting formal and informal skills assessments to determine clinical competence. The Assistant Head Nurse recognizes the value of and works within a family centered care philosophy. Many AHS employees are restricted to work only at a single LTC/DSL site.
