The Assistant Facilities Manager, Operations supports the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the Stratford Festival's buildings, theatres, and properties. This role coordinates maintenance programs, manages trades and vendor relationships, and supports operational and construction projects. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Assistant Facilities Manager collaborates with internal teams and external contractors to ensure building systems and infrastructure operate effectively, safely, and in compliance with regulatory standards. The position also provides leadership to facilities staff, participates in emergency on-call support, and contributes to continuous improvement of facilities operations and safety practices.
Responsibilities:
Facilities Operations & Technical Oversight
Oversee facility requirements related to skilled trades, building systems, and operational infrastructure.
Coordinate and monitor maintenance activities, repairs, and contracts across all Festival buildings and properties.
Manage trades and service categories/projects for facility building and property operations.
Support both operational and construction-related projects, including minor and major building projects, renovations, and lifecycle upgrades.
Manage the building asset repair program, ensuring timely and cost-effective resolution of maintenance issues.
Oversee and support the operation of key systems including security/access control, Key Control Systems, HVAC, mechanical, electrical, roofing, fire and life safety systems (includes fall protection) CCTV, two way radio systems.
Regulatory Compliance & Safety
Ensure compliance with all relevant legislative, regulatory, and policy requirements, including those set by the Ontario Building Code (OBC), TSSA, ESA, OFM, and environmental regulations.
Support all Occupational Health & Safety Act responsibilities related to facilities, contractors, and staff.
Assist in hazard assessments, identifying training needs, safety inspections, and ensuring safe work practices are followed across the department.
Contractor, Vendor & Stakeholder Coordination
Act as primary liaison with internal departments, external contractors, consultants, and service providers.
Manage service categories and vendor relationships to ensure quality, compliance, and timely delivery of work.
Coordinate contractor access, scheduling, and oversight to support a safe and efficient work environment.
Team Leadership & Operational Support
Provide guidance and direction to facilities staff regarding daily operational duties.
Participate in workforce planning including staff scheduling, coverage planning, and replacement staffing to meet operational needs.
Provide support to the Facilities Manager and Facilities Management team during peak workloads, absences, and special projects.
Participate in the on-call rotation for emergency facilities support.
Recruit, manage and provide direction and support to employees, fostering professional development, effectively managing performance and maintaining a caring and inclusive work environment.
Adhere to the Stratford Festival Health & Safety Commitment and Procedures, and ensure that safe work practices and policies are supported and enforced within reporting structure.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Post-secondary diploma program, typically a two year program, or equivalent, (i.e. Community college, Technical Institute or Trade School, etc.) in Facilities Management, Building Systems, Engineering Technology, Trades or equivalent relevant experience. Practical, hands-on experience in facilities or building operations may be considered in lieu of formal education.
4 to 6 years of related experience in facilities management, building operations, or property management.
Demonstrated knowledge of building systems, mechanical and electrical systems, roofing, fixtures, hazardous materials, elevators, HVAC, and general property operations.
Experience with emergency generators, emergency lighting systems, and related infrastructure is preferred.
Working knowledge of Health & Safety legislation, safe work practices, and contractor safety management.
Familiarity with construction drawings (all divisions) and understanding of construction processes, trades, and sequencing.
Experience supervising or leading staff, providing operational oversight, and coordinating team activities.
Experience in a unionized environment is an asset but not required.
Electrical or HVAC certification is preferred but not required.
Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and respond effectively to changing operational needs.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and stakeholder-management skills.
Motivated, proactive team player with strong problem-solving abilities and follow-through.
Working knowledge of skilled trades including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, security, fire and life safety systems, and Fall Protection Systems is preferred.

This full-time posting is for an existing vacancy located in Stratford, Ontario. This position requires the candidate to work onsite, with remote available when required. Regular work hours for this position are Monday to Friday, but may require the candidate to work holiday and weekend hours as scheduled.
