Job Title Assistant Director, Wildlife Animal Care Reports to Director of Animal Welfare Job Purpose

  • Full-time position that works in close coordination with the Director of Animal Welfare to manage daily tasks of animal husbandry and supervise volunteers.
  • Replacement for Director of Animal Welfare during absences.
  • Through leadership actively contribute to fostering a safe and inclusive environment where we come together to learn and understand living with wildlife.
  • Responsible for ensuring that exceptional animal husbandry, medical treatment, and enrichments are monitored and implemented.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Complete animal intakes which involve dealing with the public.
  • Share knowledge regarding wildlife with the public either in conversation or email.
  • Triage new patient intakes and recommend medical treatment plan including dietary needs and schedule for feedings.
  • Maintain daily intake logs and medical records for assigned animals.
  • Ensure there is an action plan for each individual animal and monitor the animal\xe2\x80\x99s progress.
  • Contribute to wildlife enclosure enrichment including mentoring/training volunteers.
  • Identify areas for improvement in animal environments or facilities.
  • Prepare animals for medical procedures and assist Veterinary Doctors.
  • Participates in euthanasia decisions and procedures.
  • Capture, restrain and handling of animals, both during a rescue and those in care.
  • Coordinate animal transfers/releases into the wild with the authorization of the Director of Animal Welfare.
  • Supervise and train volunteers in proper wildlife rehabilitation procedures.
  • Administer and mark written tests completed by volunteers; providing feedback and coaching as required.
  • Develop and ongoing review of training plans for volunteers.
  • Assign and schedule daily sundry duties to volunteers
  • Develop and oversee infection control and biosecurity protocols, ensuring compliance by the greater team.
  • Escalate to Director Animal Welfare any problems with procedures or volunteers.
  • Adhere to and reinforce all policies and procedures (including all safety and medical protocols) set out by AVWS; and report all incidences of non-compliance to the Director of Animal Welfare immediately.
  • Additional Responsibilities: o May be required to perform other Aspen Valley position functions. o Other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Degree as a Vet Technician mandatory.
  • Experience in Managing a Rehabilitation Centre preferred
  • Proven experience in a leadership role with supervisory experience.
  • Up to date rabies vaccination and tetanus vaccination highly recommended.
  • Must be a mature individual with a deep-seated compassion for wildlife and a strong desire to make this a long-term career aspiration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to animal welfare practices and philosophies.
  • Understanding of infection control and prevention measures.
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast paced and stressful environment.
  • Able to perform physically demanding tasks, such as heavy lifting.
  • Demonstrated experience in hand and tube feeding methods and be able to calculate proper drug dosages.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Must have respect for fellow employees, volunteers, and the public
  • Must be flexible and well organized and able to multi-task
  • Must be able to learn quickly and react quickly in various animal care situations
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Must not have allergies limiting or affecting exposure to animals.
  • Must have a valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license.
Working Conditions
  • Full-time position
  • Reside on site; staff housing provided as part of total compensation package
  • Able to work outdoors regardless of the weather conditions.
  • Working under physically active and laborious conditions.
  • Comfortable working in remote area; nearest town is 40km away.
  • Working with the public as well as volunteers.
  • Flexibility in working evenings and weekends, or as required, and working on-call as needed (including days off).

  • Procedure training provided by Director of Animal Welfare through job shadowing
  • Ongoing support as required

Education:
  • Bachelor\'s Degree (required)
Experience:
  • Veterinary Technician: 1 year (required)
  • Working with a Vet: 1 year (preferred)
