Job Title: Assistant Digital Editor Application Deadline: March 26, 2023 at 11:59 pm **Please Note: This position is dependent upon external funding, yet to be received by the OFAH ** Potential Start Date: May 1, 2023 Hours: 35 hours per week (8 week contract, but specific hours and duration to be determined pending funding approval) Location: Office located in Peterborough, ON (remote and hybrid work environment available) Rate of Pay: $16.50 per hour + 4% vacation pay Number of Positions: 1 Applicants must be youth between the ages of 15 and 30 (inclusive) at the start of employment, as per the requirements of the Government of Canada\xe2\x80\x99s Canada Summer Jobs Program. Ontario OUT OF DOORS (OOD)is currently seeking an Assistant Digital Editor to work with the editorial team to produce appealing hunting, fishing, and outdoor-related editorial content for the OOD brand, including www.oodmag.comand social media, directly reporting to the Digital Editor and ultimately reporting to the Managing Editor and Editor/Associate Publisher. Please note: This position will be based remotely at the individual\xe2\x80\x99s home. The individual must have access to a computer (e.g. desktop, laptop, tablet), high speed internet and web browser. Key Responsibilities: - Assist with day-to-day editorial activities of the OOD website, including uploading news and photo content using Wordpress; - With assistance, pitch and write at least one story idea that focuses on a challenge related to Ontario\xe2\x80\x99s fish and wildlife resources and our opportunity to enjoy those resources (e.g. climate change, invasive species, access to natural spaces, etc.); - Assist with compiling and uploading the digital edition of the magazine. This includes optimizing, inserting photos and videos, and creating and checking links; - Assist with the creation and distribution of digital edition subscriber notifications and reminders (via Mailchimp eblasts) and push notifications (via our Edition Digital platform). - Assist with maintaining the online photo gallery, including resizing images and sending out Photo Friday prizes to winners; - Assist with preparation of the bi-monthly OOD enewsletter through Mailchimp software; - Scan website periodically to ensure plugins are working and report any issues immediately; - Draft content for OOD social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram), monitor comments, and with approval, engage on external pages on behalf of OOD; - Moderate the OOD community forum daily, create OOD related threads, and engage with them, as requested. - Assist with preparation of the monthly website analytic and visitor engagement report and participate in the meeting; - Scan news sites and outdoors-focused websites to source news stories and pitch them to the edit team. - Help create quizzes, infographics, videos, memes, photos, vintage (#TBT) and other content to engage readers on the web and via social media; - Assist in uploading the online Classified ads, proofing the print version of the magazine, contest administration, and other tasks; and - Non-editorial administrative duties as required (mailing contest prizes, cleaning up lists, emails, etc.). Education and Qualifications: - College or university student studying or graduated in the field of publishing, journalism, editing, graphic design or equivalent work-related experience in the related field; - Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment; - Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and - Legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations. Required Skills and Experience: - Advanced literacy and ability to write using clear language; - Knowledge of computer design and layout, and word processing software; - Strong computer filing and management skills; - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to use diplomacy and tact; - Good organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills; - Ability to take direction, work well within a team while managing independent assignments; and - Familiarity with using social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube).
