THE OPPORTUNITYWe are currently hiring an Assistant Accountant to join our team on Vancouver Island. The position will be based out of our Cowichan Bay Sawmill, located in Cowichan Bay, BC.What You\xe2\x80\x99ll Do: An integral part of our manufacturing finance team, the Assistant Accountant works closely with our Division Controller, Accountant and Operations Manager to provide accounting and finance support services for Western\xe2\x80\x99s Cowichan Bay Sawmill operations. You will develop your skills as an accounting professional by providing accurate, concise and effective financial transaction recording and reports. This is a fantastic developmental role for someone currently enrolled in the CPA program looking to gain experience in manufacturing and forestry industry!Who You Are: You have 1-3 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in accounting roles supporting full cycle accounting and are currently enrolled in the CPA program (or working on prep courses with a desire to pursue your CPA). You are a self-starter with strong attention to detail and strong people skills who is keen to learn and grow your career! In this fast paced, manufacturing environment, you\xe2\x80\x99re someone who thrives in a role with high-volume workloads and tight deadlines.What We Offer:

Work Environment: This role is to be performed in person at our Cowichan Bay Sawmill located in Cowichan Bay, BC on Vancouver Island.RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Month end journal entries and balance sheet and sub ledger reconciliations;
  • Weekly and monthly reporting;
  • Work directly with operational and finance personnel across the business;
  • Prepare ad hoc reports for management as needed;
  • Support Division Controller with tracking performance of various projects and KPIs, and optimization analysis, and;
  • Other duties that may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience
  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Business, Economics and/or related area;
  • 1-3 years of work experience in an accounting or finance department;
  • Experience in full cycle accounting is strongly preferred;
  • Enrolment in CPA designation program is preferred; will consider candidates working on prep courses.
Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies
  • Demonstrates knowledge of full cycle accounting;
  • Well-developed communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Solid working knowledge of MS Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word);
  • Detail focused with strong organization skills;
  • Ability to work with tight deadlines and prioritize tasks; and
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization.
