Position Summary
This position operates maintains and repairs the asphalt plant and various types of equipment as required This position reports to the Crew Lead Asphalt Plant Key Duties & Responsibilities
Operates under the supervision of a Crew Lead Asphalt Plant a fully computerized batch plant which includes operation and control of cold and hot bins liquid asphalt storage silos and related equipment for storing and dispensing asphalt mixes dust collections system heating weighing and mixing ingredients at predetermined proportions and dispatching various asphalt mixes
Assist the crew lead andor industrial mechanic to performs inspection maintenance and complicated repairs as necessary to ensure the asphalt plant and other stationary equipment is kept in good operating condition which at times requires working at sixty 60 or more feet above ground level work and lift heavy weights up to 50 kg
Conducts routine tasks related to preventive maintenance and replacement of the faulty or wore out components of the asphalt plant rotary and deck screener twin bin feeder and other stationary equipment
Operates and maintains equipment and machinery such as front end loader skid steer fork lift band saw hydraulic press vertical drill electric arc welder mig welder plasma cutter etc
Orders receives and signs off shipments of liquid asphalt
Follows operating procedures and instructions provided by the crew lead
Adjusts cold bin and hot bin formulas as needed to meet mix design and product specifications
Directs and supervises the work of casual employees assigned as helpers
Provides training and guidance to new staff to ensure suitable development of skills and techniques required for the asphalt plant and equipment operation
Work without direct supervision most of the time and entirely on weekends and after normal business hours
Responsible for ensuring thorough record keeping of daily work activities
Ensure that product quality and safety standards of the Asphalt Production and Materials Engineering are maintained including compliance with divisional and departmental operating standards processes and procedures
Will be required to work different shifts
Performs related duties as required Key Qualifications
Typically the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are obtained through Grade 12 and self study of asphalt plant operation manual, available on request in electronic form from the Manager of Asphalt Production and Materials Engineering, and a minimum of three years experience in assisting in the operation and maintenance of an asphalt plant, stationary equipment and two years experience in operating a front end loader and one year experience operating a skid steer.
Must possess the internal Asphalt Plant Operator Level 1 Certificate issued to candidates who obtain 70% mark on principals of batch plant operation test and 90% mark on asphalt plant safety test.Knowledge of the processes of asphalt production in a batch plant.
Basic knowledge of the City of Regina asphalt specifications.
Ability to work in confined spaces, dusty, cold or hot environment.
Ability to read and understand schematics, graphs and charts and to perform basic mathematical calculations.
Ability to read, examine, comprehend and appropriately apply information and instructions from written materials and interactive electronic manuals.
Ability to keep accurate, up-to-date records in written form.
Ability to operate asphalt plant, conveyors, rotary and flat screeners, bin feeders and mobile equipment with skill and efficiency and with due regard to safety measures and procedures which must be observed to protect both the public and fellow employees.
Ability to demonstrate mechanical inclination to carry out repairs and maintenance of asphalt plant and stationary equipment under the direction and supervision of a crew lead, industrial mechanic or the asphalt plant supervisor..
Ability to schedule work of self, organizing and prioritizing multiple and changing work demands while considering workload and operational requirements.
Ability to operate assigned equipment with skill and efficiency with due regard to safety measures which must be observed to protect both the public and fellow employees.
Ability to perform work in a safe manner. and to train other employees in the safe operation, servicing, maintenance and care of equipment.
Ability to physically perform the duties of this position including the ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 kg). Past injury history and doctors certificate may be required.
Ability to provide guidance and training in the operation, servicing, maintenance and care of equipment.
Ability to maintain co-operative and harmonious working relations with other employees.
Ability to operate a computer and Windows based Libra batching and silo operation software .
Ability to operate machinery such as band saws, hydraulic press, vertical drills and electric arc welders etc. Working/Other Conditions
Will be required to work shift and/or irregular hours.
Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and Front end Loader and Skid Steer Certificates.
Must be able to obtain the Confine Space Training Certificate.
Will be required to work outside, in cold or hot weather, disassembling, repairing and assembling asphalt plant components and stationary equipment.
Will be required to work in confine spaces, dusty and dirty environment and at high elevation.

Proof of education is required.
