ASL Instructor

POSITION STATUS:

Part time - Permanent (Non-Union)

SCHEDULE:

3 hours per week (Schedule is flexible depending on class times and instructor availability)

Coordinator of Sign Language Services

The Bob Rumball Canadian Centre of Excellence for the Deaf (formerly the Bob Rumball Centre for the Deaf) was the first facility of its kind, and for over 30 years has provided the Deaf Community a space without communication barriers. Within this space an educational, independent living, and a social environment for the Deaf has blossomed. From its starting point as a community recreation facility, the Bob Rumball Centre has expanded into offering a range of specialized services to those within the Deaf Community that require support. These include seniors', those with developmental, physical, health, or mental health issues, infants and young children, and newcomers to Canada. Our mission as an organization is to provide care and opportunities in a communication-rich environment that enhances the quality of life of those we serve. POSITION SUMMARY:

The ASL Instructor provides American Sign Language instruction, based on the Signing Naturally Curriculum, for the hearing community. .

PRIMARY DUTIES

Provides stimulating learning experience for youth and adult students Encourages student engagement by providing a creative, positive learning experience Provides students additional in person and email support prior to quizzes and final exams Monitors class attendance and ensures that students receive learning materials Ensures learning objectives are met by following course outlines and allocating time properly Develops creative activities, based on different learning styles, to ensure learning objectives are met Contributes to the development of teaching material for classes, camps and retreats Ensures course outline is consistent with the Signing Naturally Curriculum Maintains instructor files, including program and activities, for each level of instruction Prepares student report cards within tight timeline and submits report cards to Sign Language Services (SLS) coordinator Collaborates with team by attending and participating in meetings and sharing information Assists with marketing of ASL classes, camps, retreats and immersion weeks to the hearing community Completes reports thoroughly and in a timely manner Committed to ongoing professional development Able to effectively use or learn to use SLS technical equipment in the office and classroom, including, laptops and LCD projectors Ensures classrooms, SLS storage and teacher's office are left tidy with any maintenance issues reported to the correct offices Position may transfer to different location based on business needs

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful completion of High school (Grade 12) Fluent in American Sign Language Extensive knowledge, understanding and relationship with deaf culture and the deaf community Successful completion of Deaf Culture, Basic Linguistic Structures of ASL and "Signing Naturally" Curriculum Level One and Three Teaching experience teaching using the Signing Naturally curriculum Highly developed leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills Ability to work with minimal supervision Position may transfer to different locations based on business needs Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends (as needed) Valid full G Driver's license
