As & When position meaning there is no set schedule for the position and shifts will be offered when they become available.

The As & When Ferry Operator performs a safe operation, inspection, and field maintenance for the Little Fort & McLure ferry, landings, machinery, equipment, buildings, and safety equipment.

Duties and responsibilities will include:

Carries out assigned planned inspections, maintenance, and repair tasks. Safely operates ferry and associated equipment to ensure the comfort and safety of passengers. Reports unsafe water or environmental conditions using the established chain of command. Periodically reviews SMS. Takes appropriate action such as removing debris from water or waiting until conditions change, monitoring river conditions, levels, and water flow. Conducts inspections of machinery and ancillary equipment for deteriorating performance and appearance. Report's safety concerns, defects and repairs needed. Maintains and cleans equipment, building and ferry area. Instructs drivers and guides vehicles onto ferry ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Removes snow and ice from the ferry, ferry towers and passenger pathways. Ensures that the ferry is ready for the next shift's operation. Maintains stock of supplies and fuel for the ferry. Unlocks lifeboat, fire extinguishers, life jackets and any other components for daily operation.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum age of 18. Preferably Secondary School Graduation or equivalent and hold a valid BC Class 5 driver's license. Candidate must demonstrate an ability to safely operate the reaction ferries as well as its associated tools and equipment. Ability to respond to emergency situations calmly, effectively, and efficiently. Comfortable working alone. A-2 Marine Emergency Duties certification or willing complete training. Standard First Aid certificate is an asset.

PROVISO:

The successful candidate must reside in the Barriere, McLure, Little Fort, or Clearwater area. Duties require outside work in all types of weather and irregular hours due to emergencies. After-hours, weekend, and shift work may be required.

This position is subject to a 45-day probationary period from the date of the award.
