Alberta Lawyers Indemnity Association (\xe2\x80\x9cALIA\xe2\x80\x9d) is the member-funded, non-profit corporation that manages Alberta\xe2\x80\x99s indemnity program for private practice lawyers (\xe2\x80\x9cSubscribers\xe2\x80\x9d), providing economic and reputational protection to them and compensation to members of the public who have suffered specified financial losses due to the actions of Subscribers including professional errors and misappropriation. ALIA operates as a separate financial entity from The Law Society of Alberta, ALIA\xe2\x80\x99s sole shareholder which regulates the legal profession in the public interest. ALIA is seeking an Articling Student to join its team for a 12-month term in 2023-2024. ALIA\xe2\x80\x99s General Counsel and Senior Manager, Risk will serve as the Articling Student\xe2\x80\x99s principal, and the student will also be assigned a mentor and will work with various lawyers and professionals within ALIA including our in-house counsel team and counsel on our claims team. This will give the Articling Student hands-on involvement in interesting claims and litigation files, as well as exposure to corporate in-house practice. The Articling Student will gain valuable insight into lawyer professional liability claims and practice. The successful candidate should be ready to commit to working full-time in our Calgary office starting on July 25, 2023. ALIA may be able to accommodate requests to change this start date.
Key Responsibilities:
The Articling Student will:
Assist with the representation of ALIA and Subscribers on claims litigation files of varying complexity, including assisting with liability assessment, legal research, litigation strategy, settlement negotiations and court attendances.
Assist with the investigation, assessment, management and settlement of neglience and misappropriation claims made against Subscribers.
Assist in the assessment and evaluation of coverage under ALIA\xe2\x80\x99s Group Policy.
Conduct research and write legal memoranda.
Assist with governance and special projects.
Participate in ALIA\xe2\x80\x99s internal education initiatives.
Make a positive contribution to a high performance, results-orientated culture.
Complete other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
Qualified for admission to the Law Society of Alberta as a student-at-law.
Expectation to successfully complete the requirements for a Canadian common law degree by July 2023, or internationally trained lawyer or graduate who has obtained a Certificate of Qualification from the National Committee on Accreditation.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of executives, managers, staff, and subject matter experts.
Excellent time management, prioritization, organizational, judgment and communication skills.
Strong work ethic with attention to detail and a sharp focus on the quantity and quality of work produced.
Occasional business travel within Alberta may be required.

Current Hybrid Work
What does our current hybrid model look like? Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are in-office attendance days and Mondays and Fridays are flexible. This means that you may work remotely on Mondays and Fridays if you want. You are also more than welcome to continue to work four or five days in the office if that is your preference. Having multiple in-office days allows room for collaboration, social connections, mentorship, and cross-departmental interaction.
