Position Description
Reporting to the NBDS Manager, the Art Therapist, as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, is responsible for delivering arts-based self-reflective practices to children, youth and families in the 13 First Nation communities. They will assist individuals using a strength-based, resiliency focused approach by offering individual and group counselling services that address issues across the whole spectrum of the human experience. Salary: Per Annum, after successful probationary period
Term: Full time \xe2\x80\x93 1 FTE
Location: 240 Veterans Drive, 3rd Floor, Kenora, Ontario
Reports to: NBDS Program Manager Summary of Duties
  • Evaluates, prepares and adapts art therapy treatment plans for clients
  • Work with groups or individuals with the goal of improving clients\xe2\x80\x99 psychological, social and physical well-being using a strengths-based approach
  • Contributes to evaluating clients\xe2\x80\x99 psychological, social and physical level of functioning in order to determine their needs and establish a care plan and art therapy objectives/goals
  • Selects appropriate mediums of visual expression and implements treatment strategies that are consistent with the therapeutic objectives established in the treatment plans. Ensures that the necessary materials are on hand and orders more when necessary
  • Regularly evaluates the effectiveness of treatment plans and adapts them according to the evolving needs and abilities of each client
  • Maintains a supportive relationship with clients by providing them with a secure and stable therapeutic space
  • Maintains supportive relationships and open channels of communication with clients\xe2\x80\x99 caregivers.
  • Contributes to raising awareness about the art therapy services among other professionals, volunteers, and the public
  • Documents and keeps up-to-date all activities, evaluations, treatment plans, progress notes and reports related to individual clients or client groups
  • Order and maintain art supplies
  • Travel to KCA serviced communities as assigned
Qualifications
  • Postgraduate level training in art therapy, or the equivalent recognized by the Canadian Art Therapy Association
(CATA)
  • At least 2 years\xe2\x80\x99 art therapy experience and good knowledge of psychodynamic theory and developmental psychology
  • Registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists or working towards full Registration or licensed to work in Ontario with another professional body
  • Membership with OATA, CATA or other professional Association an asset
  • Experience working with children, adolescents and families
  • Familiarity with any of the following: trauma informed practice, attachment, relational psychotherapy, CBT, neurobiology and or experience working with children on the Autism spectrum
  • Strong commitment to professional development and self-reflective practice
  • Experience in planning and facilitating individual and group art therapy sessions
  • Innovative and creative thinker who shows initiative and curiosity for new ways of working
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to manage challenging situations
  • Strong ability to work both independently as well as part of a team
  • Can work flexible hours, and if required, evenings
  • Active in their commitment to anti-oppressive practice
Skills
  • Fluency in English
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Good judgment and diplomacy
  • Strong computer skills and familiarity with video conference software (e.g., Zoom), Canva and the Microsoft
Office ecosystem (e.g., TEAMS, SharePoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Respect for the traditions, values and norms of clients originating from different cultures and ethnicities
  • Understanding of childhood development and indigenous healing approaches
  • Knowledge of Ojibwe language an asset
