Overall Purpose

Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Student Transportation, the Area Supervisor, Student Transportation is responsible for maintaining and supervising the day to day operation of the assigned transportation area.
Summary of Duties
---------------------
Direct and control the daily planning, operation and administration of the area Transportation Department and transportation services (school bus and provision of T.T.C. tickets) for an average of 3000-5000 students and 150 schools per area;
Monitor the delivery of transportation service by ensuring contractor compliance with applicable acts, codes & regulations, Board policy and standard procedures;
Responsible for the on-site observation at schools or surveillance of school buses to investigate safety concerns, issues with designated bus sites, vehicle safety, routing & drivers (Board and contractor), school bus loading zone and crossing guards;
Conduct on-site route audit/evaluations to observe routing, student or driver issues;
Conduct on-site measuring of distance from a student's home to their program school;
Respond to inquiries from within and outside of the Toronto District School Board regarding the Transportation Policy, Highway Traffic Act and Ministry of Transportation regulations;
Maintain effective interpersonal relations with the Board staff, parents, unions and other groups;
First level of contact from parents, school and outside organizations in the Transportation Appeal Process;
Assist in the approval and monitoring of expenditures;
Maintain statistical records of transportation information to assist the Manager in the preparation of Ministry of Education Grants and Board reports;
Ensure equitable service in accordance with TDSB transportation policy;
Utilize routing software to assist with determination of eligibility for students applying for transportation and to monitor efficiencies;
Work collaboratively with the planning department to achieve cost savings;
Review carrier invoices for billing discrepancies;
Attend meetings at school sites with parents and school staff;
Provide assistance to the Health and Safety Officer in the event on an emergency evacuation of a school(s);
Remain abreast of new legislation and regulations affecting the safe delivery of transportation; and
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
------------------
Two year community college diploma relevant to transportation services with three years of progressively responsible experience in administration of transportation services, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
Extensive knowledge of Highway Traffic Act, Canadian Standards Association D250 and D409 School Bus Standards, Safety ,Safety practices relative to the Occupational Health & Safety Act; current Federal & Provincial regulations regarding school purpose vehicles & student transportation; Carrier Contracts and related Board standards procedures;
Knowledge of on-site inspection of school purpose vehicles;
Proficient computer skills including Trillium/Report Generator/SAP systems, word processing, email, spreadsheets and databases;
Familiarity with software programs for school Bus Route Planning; as well as student, employee and financial information systems;
Ability to communicate in a sensitive, courteous manner with students, parents, trustees, transportation providers, community members, staff and the general public with a customer service focus;
Strong problem solving skills;
Excellent work organization and time management skills and ability to meet deadlines;
Experience responding to emergencies and dealing with stressful situations; and
Proven leadership and supervisory skills.

Provision of own vehicle for Board Business.
Require regular travel within assigned region.
Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends, sometimes with minimal or no notice.
