Job Description

The Area Manager reports to the Ship Manager and is responsible for managing and directing all production activities within a specific Ship. The position must ensure safety, quality, cost and schedule adherence of the blocks and zones within the area in order to contribute to efficient operations. This position will require daily liaison with Safety, Quality & Accuracy Control, and Trade Personnel.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

What you'll do

Responsible for the safety of all employees working in assigned Area during the construction process. This includes a key focus on area housekeeping and set up of services. Communicates HSEQ plans to General Supervisors and ensures that all Area employees look to eliminate safety hazards at every opportunity. Manages and coordinates the work and schedules with General Supervisors, subcontractors and vendors within Area. This role has overall responsibility for the sequence of work in the assigned area or Block as well as the release of work to the next Trade. Ensures schedules are managed to current installation methods and technologies in order to complete work with minimal disruption to other Stage of Construction (SoC) activities. Monitors and reports safety, quality, cost and schedule performance for all work in assigned Area and advises SOC Manager if deviations are anticipated. Initiates timely corrective action plans necessary to maintain overall schedule adherence. Verifies completion of production work for each phase of the block/zone. Conducts necessary inspections and reports results to the SoC Manager. Provides input to Trade Superintendent for trade improvements (related to training, equipment or process) necessary for optimal build strategy implementation. Works with Supply Chain to resolve material, quality and schedule issues. Active daily management and maintenance of Seaspan Production Systems. Monitors team performance, coaches General Supervisors, initiates and follows through on necessary improvements and recognizes worker performance. Performs all job-related responsibilities in accordance with Seaspan's Core Values and leads by example.

What you'll bring

College degree or trades ticket preferred. Minimum 5 years of related work experience at a Manager level, preferably in shipbuilding or heavy industrial industry. Proficient knowledge of trade responsibilities specific to heavy manufacturing (welding, metal fabrication, electrical, pipefitting, paint/sandblasting, mechanical, rigging). Proven supervisory and management experience in a union environment. Experience in the application of behavioral based safety. Strong written, verbal and electronic communication skills. Strong problem solving skills, analytical abilities and interpersonal skills. Strong customer service focus. Strong commitment to the business deadline of critical deliverables. Demonstrated initiative, creativity and integrity. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal. Strong organizational skills. Excellent computer skills including Co-Console/Completions Management Systems and MS Suite of tools. Demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize and problem solve. Good judgment and reasoning skills. Ability to work with limited direction and to function as a key team member.

The estimated salary for this position is $137,000 -$154,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
