The Anglican Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable
Diocesan Archivist
to steward, preserve, and animate the historical records of our Diocese. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about archival work, committed to high professional standards, and eager to support the mission and ministry of the Church through the care of its documentary heritage.
About the Role
Appointed by the Bishop, the Diocesan Archivist reports to the Diocesan Manager of Operations and works closely with the Bishop, Diocesan Council, Diocesan Synod, and the Archives Committee. The Archivist is responsible for the custodianship, preservation, and ongoing management of the Diocesan Archives Collection, which includes:
370 linear metres
of textual and graphic records
4 metres
of small artifacts
10 metres
of published material in the Reference Library
The Archivist oversees operations of the Archives, participates as a reporting member of the Archives Committee (a Standing Committee of Synod), and contributes to diocesan initiatives as part of the Synod Office staff team.
The Archivist also engages with professional networks, including the Anglican Diocesan Archivists Network (ADA) and the Council of Nova Scotia Archives (CNSA), and applies national archival standards and guidelines (CCA, CCI) to ensure the highest level of care.
Key Responsibilities
Ongoing Duties
Accession, process, describe, and arrange records; maintain and update finding aids.
Respond to research requests from Synod staff, clergy, parishes, and the public in accordance with access policies.
Provide guidance on records management and preservation to diocesan leaders, parishes, and committees.
Assess collection needs, plan projects, and apply preservation and conservation strategies.
Supervise Archives activities, including volunteers and researchers, ensuring proper handling of materials.
Maintain building and archives security and follow all office protocols.
Periodic Duties
Prepare and submit annual budget requests and mid?year work proposals with the Archives Committee; report expenditures bi?annually.
Provide written progress reports to the Archives Committee, Diocesan Council, Diocesan Synod, and the Anglican Diocesan Archivists Conference.
Maintain active collaboration with ADA, CNSA, and the Canadian Church Historical Society (CCHS).
Submit official reports and proposals to the Archives Committee for review and approval.
Qualifications & Competencies
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree with a minor in History or Cultural History; post?graduate studies in Archival Science or Information Technology preferred.
Minimum three years of progressively responsible archival experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of local history and Anglican Church history considered assets.
Skills & Attributes

Commitment to confidentiality, copyright compliance, and privacy protection.
Practical knowledge of archival principles, arrangement, description (including Manuscript Group system and RAD elements), access tools, and preservation/conservation methods.
Technical Skills
Familiarity with filing and records management systems.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
Strong written communication and administrative writing skills.
Research skills using primary and secondary sources.
Experience with scanning, photocopying, and digital filing.
Clear hand?printing for permanent labeling.
Working Conditions
Part?time - 12 hours per week- permanent position
Based at the Synod Office
Attendance at bi-annual Synod required
Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs and perform physical tasks typical of archival work (twisting, reaching, kneeling, repetitive movements)
Must be able to tolerate reasonable temperature variations
