What You'll Do

Reporting to the Public Works Supervisor, the Arborist Assistant serves the public by helping to maintain the trees on our public boulevards and in our parks. They also assist with other duties of the Public Works department.

Job Duties include but are not limited to:

- Plant, prune, water, and nurture trees.
- Work safely with chainsaws, sheers, etc.
- Maintain and operate pruning and planting equipment.
- Communicate with the public regarding boulevard trees on their property.
- At the direction of the Public Works Supervisor, fulfill the role of a Public Works Operator when needed.

Qualifications You'll Need

Minimum Requirements:

- Willing to obtain International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist credentials.
- Experience operating tree pruning saws and tools.
- Manitoba Class 3 driver's licence with air.
- Ability to obtain Pesticide Applicator's license.
- Have, or be willing to obtain, training in Basic First Aid and CPR, WHMIS, Respirator Training and Fit Test, Lock Out Tag Out, Aerial Lift, Fall Protection, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

- Must be a team player.
- Able to work independently and part of a team.
- Clear written and oral communication skills are required.
- Be physically capable of performing work tasks.
- Willingness to assist others and take initiative when required.
- Able to interact positively with the public.

Job Details

- Full-time (40 hrs/week), permanent position.

- Pay Range is $21.84 to $28.76 per hour, depending on experience.
- Mostly outdoor work in all weather conditions. Some indoor work in a workshop/garage environment.
- Will be required to work outside of regular hours, on weekends, and on holidays to respond to emergencies and weather conditions such as snowstorms.
- Work requires the use of PPE.
- Hazards associated with working on trees, working near mechanical equipment, using hand tools and power tools, operating vehicles, working near traffic, working in all weather conditions, working at heights, working in confined spaces, and working with hazardous materials.
