Position Overview
The Aquatics Team Lead, reporting to the Aquatics Manager and the Director of WAMY, is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of the Y Way as well as planning, implementing, and evaluating the growth of YMCA Aquatics programs and operations.
Safety Lead
Acts as the YMCA Safety Lead.
Ensures safety checks and first-aid inventory are completed monthly by all departments.
Ensures AEDs are checked monthly through building.
Assists with reporting JHSC concerns and attends JHSC meetings to represent Aquatics staff.
Tracks humidity and pool chemistry readings and reports trends to JHSC.
Conducts regular evaluations of staff duties and ensures Workplace NB safety standards are met.
Program and Department Evaluation
Collects feedback from parents on swim lessons in-person to assure accurate data representation.
Collects feedback from staff on swim lessons, work environment, and general satisfaction within Aquatics.
Identifies where improvements may be needed through survey and data collection and presents to the Aquatics Manager to follow-up.
Works in collaboration with Aquatics Champion and Aquatics Manager to implement staff and member feedback.
Staff Training, Behavior Audits, and Y Way Implementation
Contributes to development of updated staff orientations and orientation manual.
Assists with orientating new lifeguards and providing support during their probation period.
Evaluates new staff during their probation period and reports to Manager for follow-up action.
Assists in regular staff evaluations and behavior audits.
Provides mentorship and support to weekend staff team in-person as needed.
Leads the implementation the Y Way for Aquatics using tools and resources provided.
Collaborates with fellow Team Leads to find solutions and problem solve.
Event Coordination and Marketing
Fosters positive culture within Aquatics team and promotes team building activities and staff parties.
Assists Manager in running team events.
Assists Manager in running the Aquatics staff in-services as needed.
Helps plan holiday Aquatics events (Easter, Halloween, Christmas, etc.).
Promotes the Aquatics programs at community events and career fairs.
Supports Aquatics marketing and newsletter content by engaging with regular members and staff. Assists with finding Y stories to share with marketing team.
Management Assistance and Coverage
Acts as replacement to the Aquatics Manager during vacation and occasional weekends, to ensure operations remain smooth.
Manages emergencies and shift coverage if issues arise in Manager's absence.
Helps ensure Lifesaving Society standards of safety are met by both staff and facility operations when Manager is absent or on vacation.
Assists with administrative duties at the beginning of every program session as required by the Manager.
Tracks daily log sheets and ensures their completion by staff. Flags discrepancies to Manager for follow-up.
Takes inventory of Aquatics equipment and provides ordering list to Manager.
Ensures Aquatics Advanced Course supplies are stocked and maintained neatly.
General YMCA Responsibilities
Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our mission, vision and values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the association. Represents the YMCA and the association in a professional manner.
Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.
Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.
Other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
16 years old (minimum age).
Previous experience in lifeguarding is required.
Workplace Standard First Aid is required.
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification is an asset.
Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication (verbal & written) with members, staff and volunteers.
Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.
Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work - early mornings, days, evenings and weekends.
