We invite and welcome people to show up as their authentic selves; we develop people in ways that matter most to them; we build communities that connect people to what brings them joy; we create accessible and inclusive spaces, places, and programs; and we establish relationships that foster a sense of belonging.The Aquatic Lifeguard/Instructor Team Lead is responsible for the safeguarding of members, program participants, MRU Kids Camps, and rental groups and does so by providing exceptional safety supervision, incident prevention, and responding to emergencies. This position demonstrates leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills, and oversees daily Lifeguard tasks to ensure a clean and safe environment for all users. This role is also responsible for the delivery of Lifesaving Society Learn to Swim lessons.Note: There are four (4) openings for this position. This position works a rotating schedule which includes evening and weekend shifts. These roles are full-time, limited term roles, working 35 hours per week and ending August 31, 2025.ResponsibilitiesOperations (65%)

  • Provide the highest standard of lifeguarding and incident prevention at all times; including effective scanning, patrolling, safety surveillance and professionalism in a team setting
  • Respond and lead emergency situations and perform first aid and/or emergency aid as required
  • Provide exceptional customer service by promoting positive guest relations, answering questions, educating the public and responding to concerns
  • Complete assigned maintenance tasks and opening and closing checklists
  • Perform and delegate basic operational tasks to ensure regular operation of the facility
  • Complete necessary mechanical and operational checklists, head counts, forms, and first aid

  • Maintain professionalism by keeping a clean, presentable appearance, being prompt and prepared for every shift, and behaving in an appropriate manner both on and off deck
  • Mentor and provide feedback to newer staff using informal and core competencies to ensure standards are meet by the team
  • Practice safe handling of chemicals when adding needed chemicals by using proper procedures and PPE
Swim Lesson Instruction (35%)
  • This position will require instructing lesson sets as per Lifesaving Swim Instructor standards
  • Provide a safe aquatic environment for all participants during lessons by following safety standards
  • Promote positive proactive public relations and education as it relates to the aquatic facility and Recreation with participants
  • Complete all administrative work including evaluations and report cards
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
  • Current NL (within 2 years)
  • Current Standard First Aid (within 2 years)
  • Current CPR C (within 2 years)
  • Demonstrated experience in Lifeguarding and swim instruction roles
  • Passionate about the customer and student development journey
  • Commitment to and appreciation for equity, diversity and inclusion.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply compassion and patience to resolve conflict
  • Ability to effectively communicate and motivate others towards a shared goal.

  • Maintain qualifications for employment including re-certifications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical knowledge of and experience with ActiveNet recreation software.
  • AARFP Pool Operators Level 1
  • Previous aquatic centre experience in a post-secondary recreation setting.
