Job Description

The Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations (GNN) Aquaculture Liaison will be responsible for developing and executing strategic communication plans that foster positive, respectful, and transparent relationships between the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations and internal and external partnerships.

This role will focus on ensuring that our voices are heard and that our interests, rights, and cultural values are respected throughout the industry's operations and projects. This position will combine practical, good interpersonal communication and administrative skills.

Requirements:



Post secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences, and/or a related field of study

Five to ten years experience preferably in a First Nations Community or Indigenous Organization

Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License (not mandatory)

Clear criminal record check

Preferable Skills and Qualifications:



Minimum of 2 years of experience in community engagement, communications and/or public relations, with a focus on working with First Nation Communities,

Strong understanding of Indigenous governance structures, cultural practices, and rights,

Ability to develop collaborative relationships with community members and Leadership

Good verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with diverse audiences,

Knowledge of relevant regulatory framework and consultation processes for First Nations Communities,

Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a high degree of professionalism and cultural sensitivity.

Duties and Responsibilities:



Develop communication strategies tailored to the needs, respects to culture, and preferences of Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations,

Plan and oversee the delivery of communications initiatives that promote transparency and build trust between the community and industry,

Use cultural appropriate methods and tools (e.g. oral presentation, written reports, multimedia) to share information effectively

Lead the coordination of formal consultations with the Nation on projects and initiatives that may impact them.

Ensure the Companies comply with Nation direction, legal and regulatory requirements for consultation and engagement with GNN.

Address community concerns, questions, and feedback during consultation processes, ensuring that responses are thoughtful, respectful, and timely.

Provide guidance to external teams to ensure cultural sensitivity and awareness when engaging with GNN.

Promote understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and governance systems within the organization.

Support the development of culturally appropriate content and materials for community outreach.

Keep accurate records of engagement activities, community feedback, and consultation outcomes.

Prepare reports and provide updates to senior management on the status of community relations and engagement efforts.

Document issues, resolutions, and commitments made during community consultations

Proactively identify and address potential issues or concerns raised by GNN, ensuring they are handled in a culturally respectful and timely manner.

Manage communication during crises, ensuring that messaging is clear, transparent, and aligned with the values of the community.

Collaborate with other departments (e.g., Lands & Resources office, Treaty, legal, KEDC) to ensure that community feedback and concerns are integrated into business strategies and decisions.

Support the implementation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives that benefit GNN community.

Advocate for the integration of Indigenous rights, title, traditions, and cultural values in the organization's policies and practices.

Stay informed about Indigenous rights legislation, industry standards, and best practices related to First Nations consultation and engagement.

Other duties shall be assigned as required.

Positions at the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations is considered positions of trust. The selected candidate will be subjected to a 3-month assessment and 6-month probationary period at which time the performance of the candidate will be evaluated and the decision made to continue the contract for the remainder of the year. At the end of that contracted year, a further performance evaluation will be completed to determine whether the contract will be extended in the next year(s).
