Qualifications:
+ Grade 12 or equivalent diploma
+ Computer knowledge
+ Valid Driver's license and reliable vehicle
+ Be an Indigenous person (Metis, First Nation or Inuit)
+ Be unemployed or underemployed
+ Have a genuine interest in working in the trades - particularly carpentry, plumbing and/or electrical
+ Meet eligibility requirements for registering as an apprentice.
Skills and Responsibilities:
+ Ability to work with minimal supervision
+ Ability to safely operate tools and equipment required to perform assigned work.
+ Ability to produce quality work
+ Ability to work cooperatively with other trades and contractors
+ Ability to do heavy work (exert 100lbs of force occasionally and up to 50 lbs of force frequently and 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects)
The selected candidate will begin with a three-month shadowing period, working alongside experienced Journeypersons to gain exposure to various trades. After this initial phase, the apprentice will choose a trade pathway and register with the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC).
Once a trade is declared, the apprentice will be paired with a Northern Lights School Division (NLSD) Journeyperson in that specific trade. This mentor will provide direct supervision as the apprentice builds their experience hours.
The apprentice is responsible for applying to trade school, attending classes regularly, and maintaining passing grades. They will attend school as an indentured apprentice.
The apprenticeship contract will be reviewed annually. Renewal depends on several factors, including:
+ Availability of funding
+ Attendance and participation
+ Commitment to learning
+ Evaluations from the assigned Journeyperson
+ Academic performance
+ Overall work ethic and progress
