This position has a term length of 1 year plus 1 day with the strong possibility of renewal, and offers a .
Location - This position offers a flexible work arrangement, allowing for a combination of remote and/or in-office work based on work preferences. We welcome applicants from across Alberta. In the event that you need to work on-site, you may have the flexibility to attend either the Edmonton or Calgary offices based on your location and convenience. Preference will be discussed during the recruitment process.
Position Summary
The Applied Science Coordinator works in ABMI's Operations Centre and is responsible for coordinating the design and delivery of applied biodiversity monitoring programs in Alberta, including coordinating Steering Committees, and communications and relationships with government and Indigenous collaborators. This is a highly collaborative position, serving as the point of connection between multiple internal and external partners.
Responsibilities:
This position plays a key role in the development and execution of applied biodiversity monitoring programs as described below.
1. Directs and Undertakes Project Work

• Lead or contribute to all phases of project work, including proposal development, planning, implementation, data management, analysis, and reporting.
• Coordinate logistics for fieldwork, including protocol development, training, and data quality assurance.
• Organize and facilitate project meetings, track action items, and maintain documentation.
• Travel to field sites as required for planning, training, and field visits.
• Identify challenges and lead collaborative problem-solving.

2. Leads and Manages Applied Monitoring Programs

• Provide leadership in planning, implementing, and managing applied monitoring projects from initiation to completion.
• Develop and oversee project work plans, ensuring deliverables are achieved on time and within budget.
• Clarify roles and responsibilities, coordinate communication across teams, and engage collaborators and contractors as needed.
• Support independent review of project outputs and ensure high-quality results.

3. Facilitates Collaborative Programs

• Engage government, industry, Indigenous communities, NGOs, and researchers to design and coordinate applied monitoring initiatives that address environmental management needs, with a focus on seismic line restoration.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with external partners and internal ABMI teams to ensure alignment and effective collaboration.
• Establish and coordinate committees or working groups to guide collaborative efforts.

4. Supports Knowledge Dissemination

• Communicate project outcomes and insights through reports, presentations, and publications.
• Summarize restoration monitoring programs and explain the use and limitations of data products to end users.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications

• BSc in natural science, ecology, geography, biological sciences, or a related discipline (MSc or PhD considered an asset).
• Over three years of experience in applied ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
• Strong organizational, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Background in project or product management, with familiarity using project management tools or software.
• Experience conducting or using data from field-based monitoring programs.
• Demonstrated leadership, adaptability, and proactive problem-solving in a dynamic environment.
• Commitment to ABMI's mission and sustainable resource management.

Preferred Qualifications

• Working knowledge or experience with tree planting/restoration/silviculture is strongly preferred.
• Experience leading or supporting multi-partner, multi-year projects, ideally in seismic line restoration or caribou habitat monitoring, is preferred.
• Knowledge of northern Alberta landscapes, species, and ecosystems, with experience working or living in remote regions, is preferred.
• Valid driver's licence is preferred.
