Applied Computer Science (ACS) at UWinnipeg provides premier education and prepares students for further education and professional careers in applied computing and business. We challenge our students to develop analytical thinking, software design and development skills, and oral and written communication skills by blending theoretical and practical aspects of Computing and Information Systems.



The

Applied Computer Science Technician is a full-time continuing

position that supports the Information Technology (IT) infrastructure of the ACS department. The successful candidate will focus on achieving the functional IT requirements of the department using off-the-shelf hardware and software. Proper technical support is essential to the success and growth of ACS's computing-based program.


Responsibilities:




Administer, maintain, and troubleshoot ACS Windows domain by deploying and managing all the Windows servers in the domain, both physical and virtual, and monitoring/tuning their performance. Identify vulnerability with vulnerability management software and apply security patches to servers. Set up and maintain ACS' computer labs and smart classrooms by setting up and configuring all new PCs/virtual desktop devices and other equipment. Install application packages based on the needs of the location; refresh the PCs in labs periodically; replace the consumables in above labs/classrooms. Deploy antivirus software on all end devices to maintain system and network security. Set up classrooms and maintain PCs in ACS offices and special-purpose rooms. Support ACS faculty with deployment, configuration, and administration of the servers/computers acquired through faculty members' research grants. Provide in-house troubleshooting to ACS faculty and students, including both hardware platforms and software packages used in teaching, research, and learning. Administer the special-purpose servers in ACS (primarily Linux and FreeBSD based systems) as well as application software systems (including, but not limited to, MS SQL Server, MATLAB, and MS System Center, etc.). Maintain documentation of ACS network configuration and overall resources. Create and maintain Windows-based ACS domain as well as UNIX-based accounts. Estimate, plan, schedule, and track project-related work. Hire, train and supervise temporary student workers for departmental projects.

Qualifications:




Postsecondary diploma in a relevant field of study that may include, but is not limited to, computer systems and networking with courses focusing on the technical aspects of computing. Certification with Cisco routers and switches is an asset. Certification with Microsoft and Linux systems is an asset. 2-5 years' experience in the field of technical support of information technology. Experience with Cisco routers and switches. Experience with virtualization in Hyper-V environment (server virtualization, VDI, etc). Experience with Windows and Linux system administration and computer networking Experience working with students is an asset Proficiency in software installation and maintenance, computer hardware installation and upgrades, and PC imaging. Strong understanding of Linux and Windows Operating System. Strong technical problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Excellent background in networking with emphasis on Cisco router/switch management; knowledge of IP networks, subnets and routing and other network services (DNS, DHCP, etc.). Highly detail-oriented and collaborative, with strong communication skills. Proven ability to work independently with minimum supervision. Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to multitask and respond to diverse and often conflicting demands.

Condition(s) of Employment:




Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The salary range for this position will be from $63,645.40 to $88,142.60 annually.




Note:

The work described in this posting will be conducted in-person, with an opportunity to apply for Remote Work for up to two (2) days per week.


Please note, the schedule for this role is Monday to Friday 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM (or 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM).
