The Opportunity
As
Appeals Administrative Assistant
, your primary function is to provide legal administrative support and administrative assistance to the Appeals Coordinator, Managing Lawyer and Appeal Contract Lawyers; monitor case files; make referrals to the private bar lawyers.
Key accountabilities include, but aren't limited to:
a) Maintain bring forward system;
b) Maintain limitation diary and court calendar;
c) Provide an empathetic, non-judgemental, open-minded and person-centered approach aimed at building trust with clients in order to identify legal issues and urgency, meeting them where they are at;
d) Practice active listening, non-violent communication, non-violent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques in order to achieve communication and information sharing with clients facing barriers to service through a lens of Truth & Reconciliation and Equity, Diversity & Inclusion;
e) Respond to enquiries regarding appeals from clients, lawyers and court officers;
f) Respond to enquiries from inmates of prisons and psychiatric institutions regarding appeal issues;
g) Work with court registries and transcription firms to obtain necessary file information and submit/manage transcript orders;

The Ideal Candidate
You have
Grade 12 education supplemented by legal administrative course(s)
Minimum 2 years relevant experience as outlined in rated requirements
Minimum typing speed 45 wpm
Advanced skill in MS Word
An equivalent combination of training, education and experience may be considered. You strive to exceed expectations and are a team player.
