Animal Transfer Driver

STATUS: Permanent; Full-Time

SHIFT: 35 Hours per week / Various Shifts

LOCATION: Abbotsford, BC

CLASSIFICATION: CUPE 1622

WAGE: $ 18.44 per hour

About the Position:

The Animal Transfer Driver is responsible for the safe transportation of animals in the Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley region to BC SPCA locations from external sources as well as between BC SPCA locations following the BC SPCA Animal Transfer Protocols. Maintains and oversees the care of the transfer vehicle and ensures optimal welfare for all animals transported based on the Five Freedoms and outlined in the Canadian Standards of Care. Also completes supply deliveries within the Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley region in a timely manner while demonstrating excellent teamwork.

Some specific duties:

Primary Key Responsibilities

  • Establishes strong working relationships with the Manager, Animal Transfer Program, animal centre managers, shelter staff and volunteers, and collaborates effectively as required to ensure all duties outlined below are completed.
  • Pick up supply orders from Coordinator, Logistics and deliver to animal centres
  • Pick up medical supply orders from Vancouver Animal Hospital, deliver to animal centres
  • Collects all paperwork, medication and/or special diet required from pick-up points and delivers to respective location.
  • Ensures excellent welfare of animals travelling within the vehicle at all times by
  • Loading animals into transfer vehicle using low-stress and fear-free handling;
  • Ensuring transfer vehicle is loaded with appropriate-sized animal crates;
  • Reporting any animal welfare or animal transport issues to Manager, Animal Transfer Program by email with attached pictures as needed.
  • Following the BC SPCA Animal Transfer Protocols.
  • Assists with unloading of animals at final destination using low stress and fear free handling.
  • Transfer supplies between animal centres such as kennels, bowls/rings, etc.
  • Sanitize vehicle, kennels and transfer supplies (bowls/rings, leashes, etc.) in vehicle as needed
  • Maintains the transfer vehicle(s) as per Transport Action standards.
  • Maintain vehicle maintenance records
  • Reports any vehicle issues or maintenance requirements to Manager, Animal Transfer Program immediately upon identification.
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness inside and out, report required supplies to Manager, Animal Transfer Program
  • Represents the Society in a respectful manner at all times when interacting with staff, volunteers, external contacts, as well as members of the public; answers questions as required and makes referrals where unable to answer a question directly.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including assisting with animal care in animal centres when necessary or when above duties allow.
Qualifications you need to have:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver\'s License and a strong understanding of BC driving rules and laws
  • Clean driver\'s abstract
  • Experience driving large box trucks
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to relate respectfully to a diverse audience
  • Animal handling experience an asset
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs
  • Comfortable driving in various weather conditions safely and with ease
