SHELTER MEDICAL COORDINATOR PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The Shelter Medical Coordinator (SMC) will manage the medical care and documentation of care of all animals in the NWT SPCA shelter, in foster homes and adoptive homes. SCOPE The SMC is based in Yellowknife and reports to the NWT SPCA Executive Director or designate. The SMC will be responsible for the hands-on care of all animals in the care of the NWT SPCA. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, regularly liaising with our veterinary partner as it relates to the health and wellness of all NWT SPCA animals, scheduling appointments, ordering medical supplies, preparing and administering vaccinations, medication administration and health assessments as required. The SMC will support recent adopters and fosters until all the contractual medical requirements
(vaccines, spay/neuter, microchip) are complete. The successful applicant will work collaboratively alongside the NWT SPCA Executive Director and Board members to plan, coordinate and implement NWT SPCA spay/neuter clinics and the community spay/neuter program. PAY & BENEFITS The wage is $18-$22/hour or commensurate with experience. Support, empower and enable volunteers and foster parents to expand NWT SPCA care capacity; assist with client communications, including aftercare and emergency support. Deliver superior customer service, communicate about and maintain knowledge of NWT SPCA and community partner programs. Work collaboratively with NWT SPCA team members in all areas of operations to achieve the best care for the animals, follow NWT SPCA policies, procedures, and task lists for daily assignments, including accurate and timely communications and work completion, data entry, and record keeping. Coordinate and conduct day-to-day veterinary program activities, including medical appointments, transport logistics, partner communication, maintenance of animal records, and other activities as assigned; contribute to operational efficiency and superior customer service strategies. In partnership with the Board of Directors, and community leaders, the medical coordinator will be the primary lead in the collaborative process of planning and implementation of community-based spay/neuter clinics; building partnerships with external stakeholders with the aim to support communities and expand NWT
SPCA animal health initiatives will be a top priority. Care Ensure all animals in the NWT SPCA\xe2\x80\x99s care receive primary medical care, including but not limited to the treatment of acute and chronic conditions and preventative care such as vaccinations and deworming, when necessary. Ordering, unpacking, labeling and stocking shelter medical supplies and donations. Make sure animals are cared for appropriately and within protocols at all times. Record and report any unusual condition, behaviour or illness to the NWT SPCA\xe2\x80\x99s veterinary partner as warranted. General In collaboration with the Executive Director, Shelter Leadership Team and Veterinary Partner, work collaboratively with community contacts to provide available veterinary medical support to the communities. Assist with developing shelter protocols when appropriate and relevant to the medical team. In collaboration with the operations team, monitor shelter grounds/outdoor kennels and areas multiple times daily as necessary for trash and waste. Mentor and train other staff members/volunteers as required. WORKING CONDITIONS/MENTAL/PHYSICAL DEMANDS This is a labour-intensive position that often requires lifting and carrying heavy materials. Frequently involves the handling of up to 50 lbs\xe2\x80\x94additionally, the handling of large dogs. Walking and or standing for long periods. The use of strength or agility in capturing and restraining animals. Work inside and outside as required. Exposure to unpleasant odours, bites, and scratches is possible. Appropriate dress and footwear are required to meet health and safety standards. This is a mentally challenging position due to interactions with animals that are ill, injured, or stressed. This is an ever-changing, dynamic environment that can be unpredictable and challenging. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of animal behaviour and care - be comfortable handling dogs/cats. Apply knowledge and skills in controlling/handling each animal\'s temperament. Superior customer service and organizational skills. Strong communication/negotiation skills. QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma (equivalencies may be considered) Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Assistant
(equivalent work experience may be considered) Previous experience with animal handling/previous shelter or veterinary clinic is as asset Training on the job will be considered for the right candidate ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Valid Class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License Current Standard First Aid certification Current rabies vaccine Fear Free online course (to be completed within the first 30 days of employment) Job Types: Full-time, Permanent Salary: $18.00-$22.00 per hour Benefits:
